2020 Belmont Stakes Recap

With the Kentucky Derby and Preakness postponed to later this year, these Belmont Stakes marked the first time the Triple Crown races are out of order since 1931.

Elmont, New York welcomed the Belmont Stakes back to Belmont Park for the 152nd time. Though there were no spectators other than trainers, the first large sporting event of the summer went off without a hitch.

The race is usually the longest out of the Triple Crown races at one and a half miles, but due to the current circumstances, the race was only one and one-eighth miles.

The race started with Tap It To Win in the number one post with 5-1 odds leading out of the gate. Tiz The Law entered the race as the overwhelming favorite with 4/5 odds in the number 8 post. Jockey, Manny Franco spent most of the race biding his time in third place.

Then, going into the final stretch about a mile into the race, Tiz The Law pulled into first place, just as everyone expected. After that, there was no catching him. Tiz The Law pulled out multiple lengths ahead of the rest of the field and the race was as good as his. Dr. Post who entered the race in post number nine with 7-1 odds pulled ahead into second place, but he couldn’t catch the favorite. Tiz The Law is the winner of the 2020 Belmont Stakes by 3 and ¾ lengths with an official time of 1:46.53.

It’s only fitting that during these especially trying times for New York, that Tiz The Law is the first New York-bred horse to win the Belmont Stakes since 1882 when Forester won.

The win was monumental for all involved in with Tiz The Law. The 2020 Belmont Stakes were jockey, Manny Franco’s first Triple Crown Race, and, subsequently, his first Triple Crown win.

The win is also a career milestone for trainer, Barcley Tagg. The 82-year-old has been chasing the third Jewel of the Triple Crown ever since he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness back in 2003 with Funny Cide. This year Tagg and Tiz The Law’s owner, Sackatoga Stable finally won the Belmont Stakes.

With the Kentucky Derby postponed until September 5 and the Preakness Stakes postponed until October 3, we will see if Tiz the Law will continue his success into the Fall.
