“The kids and Glennon have taught me everything,” Wambach admitted to People.

Wambach met Doyle at a literary conference in 2016. And according to Doyle, who wrote about their love story and the divorce from her now ex-husband that resulted in their love affair in her latest book Untamed, fell fast for Wambach.

In talking about her decision to follow her heart, Doyle told People, “The decision about whether to stay in my broken marriage or go with Abby didn’t feel just about love. It was about am I going to abandon myself or be wild enough to abandon everyone’s expectations of me?”

One year after meeting in 2016, Wambach and Doyle got married in 2017. And now that they are both sober and Wambach is retired from soccer, their main focus is their family.

Wambach, who also lived through a divorce after ending her marriage to fellow soccer player Sarah Huffman, admits that while “divorce is difficult,” she, Glennon, and Glennon’s ex-husband Craig Melton, make conscious choices every day to be their best for their kids.

“We make sure that the kids’ lives are as least disrupted as possible.”

In fact, Wambach even coaches 14-year-old Tish’s soccer team alongside Melton. As co-parents, they are “in constant communication.” And she says those efforts to be their best for their kids ultimately also affects how they treat each other.

And becoming a bonus mom has changed Wambach’s perspective of being a parent in general.

“I didn’t know how to be one. I had the instinct but I grew up in a very different family than the one that Glennon and I are creating.”

And she thanks Melton for that as well. Because if it wasn’t for his grace, it’s unclear how the family dynamic would have turned out.

“Craig gave me the biggest gift in allowing me into the family dynamic. He gave the kids permission to love me.” Beautiful.

Most recently, the blended family got together to celebrate Melton for Father’s Day. Doyle shared a photo of her sweet family on Instagram, with an even sweeter message for Melton.

“See this beautiful love-filled laughter-filled whole, fixed family? You made it so. Your grace. Your kindness. Your open mind, heart, door, arms,” Glennon wrote. “None of it has been easy. So many other roads you could have taken. You chose the one with the sign that said: Held and Free. And look at where that road led us. Chase’s kindness. Tish’s determination. Amma’s awe-filled laugh. You. You. You.”

How amazing is that?
