NWSL Stars Julie Ertz and Casey Short Share an Emotional Moment During the National Anthem While Wearing Black Lives Matter T-Shirts

During a match up between the Chicago Red Stars and the Washington Spirit, a touching moment between two teammates became the talk of the match. On June 27, National Women’s Soccer League stars from both teams wore black Black Lives Matter t-shirts before the start of the match.

Then during the national anthem, most of the athletes took a knee and put a hand over their hearts. It was then that the touching moment between Casey Short and Julie Ertz was caught on camera.

As the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) shared on their Twitter and Instagram account, “This moment and this movement means everything to our players.” The picture showed Ertz with her arm around Short who was using her t-shirt to wipe tears from her eyes.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the image was captured by Associated Press photographer Rick Bowmer. And Red Stars coach Rory Dames addressed the moment in an interview with Yahoo!. He said that much of the team had heightened emotions going into Saturday’s match.

“I think the emotions you saw Casey have prior to the game, and probably Julie at that point as well, I think a majority of our team has been having those kinds of emotions all day struggling with what was the right thing to do or how you show solidarity, and how do you support the Black Lives Matter movement and what’s going on.”

There were a couple of players on both teams who choose to stand for the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner. However, as a statement made by the NWSL Players Association revealed that does not mean those players do not support the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Whether a Player chooses to kneel or stand during the national anthem is a personal decision and is not indicative of whether they support BLM or their teammates. The Players Association supports both making a clear statement that Black Lives Matter and each Player making a personal decision around whether to stand or kneel during the national anthem.” the NWSLPA wrote.

Neither Ertz or Short have spoken out about the moment they shared yet. As the Bleach Report reported, the NWSL “is the first American professional team sports organization to return to play since league suspensions” due to COVID-19.
