Last month, soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo announced the tragic news that shook the world: his newborn son died during childbirth.
Ronaldo and his current girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez have been together since 2017 and share 4-year-old Alana Martina, while the soccer player also fathers a set of twins from a previous partnership. In October, the couple announced that their family was expecting two more little bundles of joy.
“Delighted to announce we are expecting twins. Our hearts are full of love – we can’t wait to meet you,” the professional athlete shared at the time.
Expecting twins, the two were horrified to discover one of their children was having complications during birth. In an unfortunate turn of events, their son did not survive.
“It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel,” Ronaldo wrote in a statement following his child’s passing. “Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.”
The 37-year-old included the sentiments, “Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.”
Ronaldo’s announcement was the news that no parent ever wants to hear. Harrowing in nature, the family has been flooded with support from fans, friends, and family all over the world. Taking the time he needs, Ronaldo also made the decision to not play in significant soccer events.
Keeping information relatively quiet for good reason, the family continues to simultaneously grieve the loss of their son while also celebrating the life of their newest edition. Staying in communication with fans, the soccer play continued to update his audience when his partner returned from the hospital and offered gratitude to those who sent kind words.

“Gio and our baby girl are finally together with us. We want to thank everyone for all the kind words and gestures,” he wrote on social media. “Your support is very important and we all felt the love and respect that you have for our family. Now it’s time to be grateful for the life that we’ve just welcomed into this world.”
Eager with anticipation, many have wondered what the newest baby’s name is. On Saturday, the talented athlete’s long-term partner Georgina Rodríguez revealed the name of the baby boy’s surviving sister.
“Bella Esmeralda 💚 180422,” Rodríguez wrote in the caption of an Instagram post.
