On May 31, retired basketball star Dwyane Wade and actress Gabrielle Union took to their respective Instagram accounts to share a message to their daughter, Zaya.

In the midst of a global pandemic and the tragic passing of George Floyd which has incited protest and the demand for necessary change, Wade and Union took a moment to celebrate their daughter on her 13th birthday. As Mamas Uncut reported, Zaya came out has a transgender woman earlier this year and ever since she’s been an advocate for the queer black community and her parents have become allies.

This is what Wade had to say about his daughter on her special day.

“I wanna take this moment to acknowledge you, Zaya, on your 13th birthday I’ve woken up every day this week with low energy and not a lot of faith in people. But waking up and watching you smile, watching you walk in your truth, and live your life your way is one of the greatest gifts I’ve been able to experience in my life.”

Wade continued by applauding his daughter for always having a courageous and bold personality in a world that may not always support her. “In a world where the color of your skin is deemed a threat you continue to be the bravest person I know…”

“And I’m gonna stand by your side until there isn’t anymore standing left to do. I love you more than words can articulate. I hope you feel all of my love today and every day of your life. You’re Bold, You’re courageous, You are Zaya. Happy Birthday, we LOVE you
