Tom Brady‘s supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen revealed that she’s been waiting for him to hang up the jersey for years.
After 22 incredible years in the National Football League, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback has finally decided to call it quits. The football player pushed the limits of what it means to be an athlete when he played well into his 40s and has 7 Super Bowls under his belt.
While many know that his significance will be recorded for years to come, according to an insider, his wife has been waiting for his retirement for many moons.
“Gisele has been hoping he would retire already for a few years, especially after he won the Super Bowl with the Bucs,” the anonymous source relayed to PEOPLE. “She’s really happy because she would really worry about him. She hates seeing him get hit.”
The source also shared that, “every year he would weigh his options but this year felt different,” and decided he was “just ready for the next chapter.”
The football star noted in his retirement announcement that he looks forward to spending as much time with his wife and children as possible. In fact, he had an entire section of his farewell address addressed to Bündchen and his children
“To my wife, Gisele, and my children Jack, Benny, and Vivi. You are my inspiration,” Brady wrote.

“Our family is my greatest achievement. I always came off the field and home to the most loving and supportive wife who has done EVERYTHING for our family to allow me to focus on my career,” he continued. The 44-year-old then specifically discussed his appreciation for Bündchen.
Brady stated, “Her selflessness allowed me to reach new heights professionally, and I am beyond words what you mean to me and our family.”
Bündchen additionally left her own commentary on social media in regards to her husband’s retirement. “So many memories! When I met you over 15 years ago, I didn’t know the first thing about football,” she began.
“But cheering for you and seeing you do what you love most made me learn about this wonderful game to the point that I seriously believed I knew more than the referees,” Bündchen continued. She concluded with the sentiments, “There is nothing you can’t achieve. I have always been here for you, you know that, and I’m as excited as you are for what the future holds!”
