20 Great Moments From the 2022 MLB Season So Far

20 Great Moments From the 2022 MLB Season So Far

Just a few months ago, we weren’t sure if there would be a 2022 MLB season. The MLBPA and MLB owners were in the middle of heated negotiations for a new CBA deal, which ultimately led to the regular season being delayed due to the lockout taking longer than anyone hoped for.

A new, five-year CBA deal was eventually reached on March 10th and Opening Day followed on April 7th after a rushed Spring Training. Since then, the 2022 MLB season has been nothing short of exciting and captivating with several players – and teams – proving their worth early.

We’re still about 25 games away from the midway point of the season, but we already have one 40-win team (New York Yankees) and 12 more teams with at least 30 wins on the year. As of June 10th, the Yankees are the only team with single-digit losses both on the road and at home.

This might be the year of the stat sheet because there are a variety of players lighting it up to start the year. For example, Aaron Judge already has 22 home runs in 56 games and two players – Pete Alonso and Jose Ramirez – have already stockpiled more than 50 RBIs.

Mookie Betts leads the league with 52 runs scored, four players have already hit four triples, and five players have at least 20 doubles. Six starting pitchers have already tallied seven wins and two of them – Tyler Anderson and Tony Gonsolin – are undefeated through 11 games.

Justin Verlander tallied his 3,000th inning pitched, Albert Pujols played in his 3,000th game, and Miguel Cabrera recorded his 3,000th hit. Alyssa Nakken became the first female on-field coach in the MLB and Bud Black won his 1,000th game as manager. It has been a great year!

Of course, those are just some of the great moments that have happened so far – let’s take a look at some of the others!

20. Christian Yelich Records Third Career Cycle

On May 11, 2022, the St. Louis Cardinals hosted the Milwaukee Brewers and while they came out with a 14-11 win, they weren’t prepared for what Christian Yelich did. He finished 4 for 5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. It was the third time he hit a cycle in his career.

Yelich started off with a ground rule double in the first inning and hit his three-run home run in the third inning with his team down 0-7. He then hit a single in the top of the fifth inning, a flyball in the seventh inning, and finished with a triple in the ninth inning as they attempted a brief comeback.

19. Joc Pederson Hits 3 HRs, 8 RBIs

On May 24, 2022, the San Francisco Giants were hosting the New York Mets and walked away with a 13-12 victory – in large part to Joc Pederson and his performance. He finished the day 4 for 6 with three home runs, eight runs batted in, and three runs scored. It was a special night.

Pederson grounded out in the first inning, but hit a two-run home run in the third inning and a two-run home run in the fifth inning. He then grounded out in the seventh before coming back with a three-run home run in the eighth and an RBI single in the ninth inning to tie the game.

18. Eduardo Escobar Hits for the Cycle

On June 6, 2022, the San Diego Padres were hosting the New York Mets when Eduardo Escobar did something that no Mets’ player had done in 10 years. He finished the game 4 for 5 with one home run, six runs batted in, and three runs scored. It was quite the performance.

Escobar opened the game with a two-run single in the first inning and followed that up with a double to start the fourth inning. He popped up to shortstop in the fifth inning, but hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning and a two-run triple in the ninth inning to give them a 9-5 lead.

17. Barrera Hits Three-Run Walk-Off Home Run

On May 14, 2022, the Oakland Athletics were hosting the Los Angeles Angels and while things were all knotted up at the end of the seventh inning, the Angels scored two unanswered runs in the eighth inning to put them up 3-1. The Athletics had one last chance at grabbing a victory.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Athletics had two men on with two outs when Luis Barrera, who stepped in as a pinch runner in the seventh inning, stepped up to the plate. Down 3-1, he hit a three-run walk-off home run to give his A’s the 4-3 win at home. It was an exciting moment.

16. Goldschmidt HIts Walk-Off Grand Slam

On May 23, 2022, the St. Louis Cardinals were hosting the Toronto Blue Jays and got off to an early 1-0 start in the second inning. The Blue Jays scored three runs in the sixth and seventh inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the seventh to tie it up.

The game would end up going to extra innings. After Toronto went scoreless in the top of the 10th, the Cardinals were in a position to win with the bases loaded. Paul Goldschmidt, who was 0 for 3 up to that point, hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Cardinals a 7-3 victory.

15. Cordero Hits Walk-Off Grand Slam

On May 22, 2022, the Boston Red Sox were hosting the Seattle Mariners and the two teams were going back and forth all night. The Sox held a 2-0 lead early and while the Mariners tied it up in sixth, the Sox quickly responded. The Mariners scored again in the ninth to tie the game.

Seattle started the 10th inning with a run scored, but the Red Sox again answered to tie it up in the bottom of the inning. That’s when Franchy Cordero walked up to the plate with the bases loaded. He only needed to bring in one run to win the game, but he hit a walk-off grand slam.

14. Buxton Hits Three-Run Walk-Off Home Run

On April 24, 2022, the Minnesota Twins were hosting the Chicago White Sox and it was another back-and-forth matchup between two teams desperate for a win. The White Sox held a 2-0 lead early and eventually a 3-1 lead, but the Twins tied it up in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Things went to extra innings and that’s when it got interesting. The White Sox scored once in the top of the 10th inning, but that wasn’t enough to overcome what the Twins had in store. After a walk and wild pitch, Byron Buxton hit a three-run walk-off home run to win the home game 6-4.

13. Alonso’s Walk-Off Home Run Lifts Mets Over Cardinals

On May 19, 2022, the New York Mets were hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and it was a tight one. The Cardinals scored one run in innings 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 as they struggled to put together a string of runs. Meanwhile, the Mets scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the fifth.

With the game tied 5-5 at the end of regulation, it went to extra innings where the Cardinals, again, scored one run. Down 6-5, the Mets were lucky to have Pete Alonso on deck. With a runner on second base (because of the extra innings rule), he hit a two-run walk-off home run.

12. Twins Beat Tigers in Dramatic Fashion

On April 26, 2022, the Minnesota Twins were hosting the Detroit Tigers and neither team wanted to give up. The Twins held a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning. That’s when the ninth inning happened and we all witnessed something special.

The Tigers threw two walks and a wild pitch to start the bottom of the ninth inning before finally getting a strikeout. That’s when Miguel Sano hit a single to right field and an error by the catcher allowed two runs to score – giving the Twins a 5-4 victory in the bottom of the 10th inning.

11. Cubs Defeat Pirates 21-0

On April 23, 2022, the Chicago Cubs were hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates and it turned out to be one of the most lopsided games in MLB history. The Cubs ended up defeating the Pirates 21-0 in a game that saw Chicago finish with 23 hits and Pittsburgh only manage to get three hits.

It started out as a modest 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning, but then the Cubs scored eight runs in the second. They then scored twice in the fourth inning, five times in the fifth inning, once in the seventh, and four times in the eighth. Even more crazy – they only hit one home run.

10. Kiermaier Hits Walk-Off, Two-Run Home Run

On April 23, 2022, the Tampa Bay Rays were hosting the Boston Red Sox and both teams were struggling to get anything going. The game was knotted up 0-0 at the end of regulation, but then things got interesting in the 10th inning as both teams finally woke up out of their long slumber.

The Red Sox were due first and struck quickly with a triple by Bobby Dalbec and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-run lead. The Rays were up next and despite their first two batters striking out, they got a balk, scored off an error, got a steal, and Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run walk-off home run.

9. Phillies Win With Walk-Off Error in 10th Inning

On May 22, 2022, the Philadelphia Phillies were hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers and while it was slow in regulation, it quickly turned into an extra-inning nailbiter. The Dodgers held a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but gave up runs in the sixth and ninth innings to tie the game up.

The Dodgers struck first in the top of the 10th inning off a Trea Turner single. The Phillies hit a leadoff single, struck out, and then hit another single before the implausible happened. A ball was hit to the second baseman and he bobbled the ball, allowing two runs to score for the win.

8. Jesus Sanchez Hits 496-Foot Home Run

On May 30, 2022, the Colorado Rockies were hosting the Miami Marlins in a stadium that’s known for seeing some balls hit deep. On this particular day, Jesus Sanchez hit the longest home run of the season at 496 feet – surpassing Mike Trout’s home run of around 471 feet.

Unfortunately, Sanchez’s home run was a solo shot and it wasn’t enough to overcome the Rockies’ seven runs. Even worse, the Rockies scored four of their runs in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth inning. Still, that home run was nasty and might still be in the air.

7. Jazz Chisholm Beefs With Home Plate Umpire

On April 21, 2022, the Miami Marlins were hosting the St. Louis Cardinals and while Jesus Sanchez homered in this one too, that’s not what we’re here to talk about. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jazz Chisholm was at the plate and was taking a little too long to get ready.

The umpire started to clap his hands in hopes of rushing Jazz to the plate and the catcher was trying to get his pitcher to rush the throw since the batter wasn’t ready. Instead, everyone reset and Jazz ended up hitting the next pitch deep. It was the best way to disrespect the umpire.

6. Trevor Story Hits for 3 HRs, 7 RBIs

On May 19, 2022, the Boston Red Sox were hosting the Seattle Mariners and it was a day Trevor Story won’t soon forget. He finished the day 4 for 4 with three home runs, seven runs batted in, five runs scored, one stolen base, and one walk. It was a complete performance.

Not only that, but it helped contribute to a much-needed 12-6 win – despite the Mariners getting off to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Red Sox stayed composed and Story carried the weight en route to a dominant performance. Story needed a performance like this badly.

5. Reds Throw Unofficial No-Hitter

On May 15, 2022, the Pittsburgh Pirates were hosting the Cincinnati Reds and it was a pitcher’s matchup all the way through. Neither team scored through seven innings and the Cincinnati Reds were working on a no-hitter. Unfortunately, the Pirates scored in the eighth inning.

While it didn’t ruin the no-hitter at the time (the run was scored off three walks and a fielder’s choice), it won’t go down as an official no-hitter because the Pirates ended up winning the game 1-0. Hunter Greene and Art Warren of the Reds go down as having pitched no-hitter losses.

4. Mets Throw a Combined No-Hitter

On April 29, 2022, the New York Mets were hosting the Philadelphia Phillies and were interested in giving their fans a show – which they did. While they used five pitchers – Tylor Megill, Drew Smith, Joely Rodriguez, Seth Lugo, and Edwin Diaz – they combined to pitch a no-hitter.

And unlike the one above, it will go down as an official combined no-hitter since the Mets ended up winning the game 3-0. It was the first no-hitter thrown during the 2022 MLB season and the second one thrown in New York Mets’ history. It was a moment they’ll never want to forget.

3. Mets Complete Massive Ninth Inning Comeback

On May 5, 2022, the Philadelphia Phillies were hosting the New York Mets and they thought they had everything in the bag. They were up 7-0 at the end of the fifth inning when the Mets finally scored their first run. It remained 7-1 until the ninth inning, which is when things turned.

The Mets put on a massive display in the top of the ninth inning, stringing together seven runs to take an 8-7 lead. The run included a home run by Starling Marte, an infield single, a double, another single, and another double – all of which for RBIs. It was quite the comeback victory.

2. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Hits Three Home Runs

On April 13, 2022, the New York Yankees were hosting the Toronto Blue Jays and it was quite a night for the 23-year-old Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. He finished the game 4 for 4 with three home runs, four runs batted in, three runs scored, and a double. It was a perfect performance for him.

They needed every last bit of that help. While Toronto had a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees tied it up in the bottom. The Blue Jays scored another three unanswered, which was enough to hold off the Yankees 6-4. It was a good win and good performance on the road.

1. Reid Detmers Throws a No-Hitter

On May 10, 2022, the Los Angeles Angels were hosting the Tampa Bay Rays and they decided to make things really tough for LA on the road. While the Angels had no problem putting up 12 runs off 18 hits, the Rays weren’t as fortunate – they didn’t score and they didn’t record a hit.

Reid Detmers was credited with the solo no-hitter – the first such no-hitter of the 2022 MLB season. He threw 108 pitches, only one walk, and two strikeouts. It was every manager’s dream scenario – a solid performance at the plate and a solid performance on the mound.

27. MLB All-Star Red Carpet Show

26. Masyn Winn Sets a Record at Futures Game

Masyn Winn is currently one of the Top 100 Prospects in the league today and is considered one of the most dynamic players – with upside as a two-way player. The Cardinals’ prospect showed off his arm when he threw a 100.5 mph throw to first base for an easy out. It set a new Statcast era record, which was recently set last week by Pirates’ shortstop Oneil Cruz.

25. Jason Dominguez Goes Yard at Futures Game

Jason Dominguez is one of the best prospects in the New York Yankees’ system right now. Just a few moments after making an error on defense, he hit a 415-foot home run – further cementing his status as a top prospect in this league. At just 19 years old, the future is bright.

24. Matt Wallner Hits Third Inning Home Run at Futures Game

Matt Wallner is one of the best prospects in the Minnesota Twins’ system. In the same inning Dominguez hit his home run, Wallner belted a home run himself – the 115.3 mph drive hit was the hardest home run hit by any of the major league players on the Twins this season.

23. Darren Baker Gets Robbed of a Hit at Futures Game

Darren Baker is the son of Dusty Baker, former major league player and current manager – in fact, Dusty was named the All-Star Game AL manager. Back to the Futures Game, his son Darren almost had himself a nice single, but was robbed by White Sox prospect Oscar Colas.

22. Bobby Miller Strikes Out the Side at Futures Game

Bobby Miller is one of the top prospects in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ system. At the Futures Game, he was playing in a stadium he will see a lot of in the future. He earned the start and not only threw a pitch over the 100 mph mark, but he struck out three batters in the first inning.

21. Emerson Hancock Throws a Perfect Inning at Futures Game

Emerson Hancock is one of the best prospects in the Seattle Mariners’ system and he one-upped Miller in the sixth inning. With one inning to prove his worth, he turned in a clean inning and struck out the side. It couldn’t have gone any better for the Double-A pitcher.

20. Denzel Clarke With a Nice Grab at Futures Game

Our final moment from the All Star Futures Game was this incredible catch by outfielder Denzel Clarke, one of the top prospects in the Oakland Athletics’ organization. Although the opposing team did score a run on the play, it was Clarke’s incredible catch that contained it to just one run.

19. Guillermo Hits a Camera at Celebrity Softball Game

Let’s move on to the Celebrity Softball Game, which had some memorable moments of its own – including this one from none other than Guillermo Rodriguez. The sidekick and security guard to Jimmy Kimmel was seen warming up, where he accidentally hit the ball directly at a camera.

18. Bad Bunny Brings Out Two Pinch Hitters at Celebrity Softball Game

Bad Bunny turned out to be the star of the Celebrity Softball Game and he didn’t even bat his first two times up to the plate. Instead, he brought out two of his friends to pinch hit for him – none other than David Ortiz (also known as Big Papi) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr..

17. Hunter Pence, Jojo Siwa, & The Miz Hit HRs at Celebrity Softball Game

Fans in attendance got to see three exciting home runs at the Celebrity Softball Game. Hunter Pence smashed one and made matters more juicy with a celebration that included showing off his San Francisco Giants’ shirt. The Miz also hit a home run, while Jojo Siwa hit an inside-the-park home run.

16. Bryan Cranston Gets Ejected at Celebrity Softball Game

Many people know Bryan Cranston for his role as Walter White in the hit drama series Breaking Bad. On July 16th, he was known for something a little different. After the umpire didn’t give him the call he wanted, he started to cause a scene as only Walter could – leading to his ejection from the game.

15. 2022 MLB Draft Features Several Familiar Last Names

The MLB Draft was full of young prospects with parents who used to play in pro sports – including Jackson Holliday (son of Matt Holliday) and Druw Jones (son of Andruw Jones), who went No. 1 and No. 2 overall, respectively. They’ll be stars like their parents one day.

Other players include Carsten Sabathia (son of CC Sabathia), Justin Crawford (son of Carl Crawford), Cam Collier (son of Lou Collier), Robert Moore (son of Dayton Moore), and Elijah Green (son of Eric Green).

14. Julio Rodriguez Hits 63 HRs Through Two Rounds at Home Run Derby

The Home Run Derby was one for the ages – not only because Albert Pujols did better than everyone thought he would, but because of Julio Rodriguez and his performance through the first two rounds. He hit 63 home runs (32 in the first round, 31 in the second round). It was an impressive and historic showing.

13. Juan Soto Wins the 2022 Home Run Derby

Julio Rodriguez made it to the final round of the Home Run Derby where he was matched up against Juan Soto. Rodriguez opened the round with 18 home runs, but it wasn’t enough as Soto smashed 19 over the fences. It brought Pete Alonso’s two-year reign as champion to an end.

12. Miguel Cabrera & Albert Pujols Honored at All-Star Game

Finally, let’s turn our sights to the MLB All-Star Game, which had a flurry of special moments to relive. We start with Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera, who were honored as legacy selections by the commissioner himself. It was Pujols’ 11th appearance and Cabrera’s 12th appearance.

11. The Tribute to Jackie Robinson at All-Star Game

Prior to the start of the All-Star Game, the MLB honored Jackie Robinson with a special tribute – he wore No. 42 for the Brooklyn Dodgers for 10 seasons. The tribute included a speech from Denzel Washington, which was perfect for the moment. “No. 42 blazed a trail,” he said.

10. Clayton Kershaw Receives First All-Star Game Start in Career

Clayton Kershaw has spent the past 15 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In that time, he has made nine All-Star appearances, but 2022 was different – it was his first ever All-Star start. He did his job in the first inning, not allowing a run and striking out one to give his team momentum.

9. Ohtani With a Leadoff Single at All-Star Game

Shohei Ohtani knew he had to get the crowd going early as the leadoff man in the top of the first inning and that’s exactly what he did – starting the game off right with a single. Unfortunately, it was followed by an Aaron Judge strikeout and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. double play to end the inning.

8. Mookie Betts Opens the Scoring at All-Star Game

After Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a ground rule double to leadoff the bottom of the first inning, Mookie Betts drove him in with a single – giving the National League a 1-0 lead early. Betts is having himself a good season so far, batting .265 with 20 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 63 runs scored.

7. Andrés Giménez Turns a Beautiful Double Play at All-Star Game

Manny Machado was the batter to follow Mookie Betts’ RBI single, but it didn’t go as planned for the batter. Meanwhile, it went exactly as planned for the shortstop Andrés Giménez, who turned in an incredible double play with a nice behind-the-back throw to second base for the first of the two outs.

6. Paul Goldschmidt Hits First HR of All-Star Game

Right after the double play, Paul Goldschmidt stepped up to the plate and gave us what we’ve been looking for – the first home run of the All-Star game. It came in the bottom of the first with two out, giving the AL a 2-0 lead. Goldschmidt was making his seventh All-Star appearance.

5. Alex Menoah & Others Are Mic’d Up at All-Star Game

One of the best things about baseball broadcasts is the mic’d up moments – which are becoming more popular today, especially in-game interviews. We got to see a lot of that at the All-Star Game, including some funny soundbites from Blue Jays’ pitcher Alek Manoah – he was making his first All-Star appearance.

4. Giancarlo Stanton and Byron Buxton Go Back-to-Back at All-Star Game

Not much happened in the second and third innings, but the fourth inning got a little interesting. Jose Ramirez hit a leadoff single and while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. flew out, Giancarlo Stanton came through with a two-run shot, tying the game 2-2. The next batter was Byron Buxton, who went yard for a beautiful back-to-back exchange.

3. Big Papi Interviews Dugout at All-Star Game

David Ortiz spent 20 seasons in the MLB, 14 of which with the Boston Red Sox. He’s no stranger to the All-Star game, making 10 appearances in his day and even winning a Home Run Derby. Nowadays, he’s becoming quite the well-respected analyst and we always enjoy his insight.

2. Ryan Helsley Throws a 103-MPH Pitch at All-Star Game

Ryan Helsley is a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. He’s in his fourth season in the major leagues and was making his first All-Star appearance. In addition to throwing a 103 mph pitch, he finished with two strikeouts and no runs in the top of the eighth inning, allowing just one hit.

1. Emmanuel Clase Strikes Out the Side at All-Star Game

It’s the bottom of the ninth inning and the American League has a 3-2 lead over the National League. With one last chance remaining, the NL had to get past closer Emmanuel Clase – and they couldn’t. He struck out the side – Garrett Cooper, Kyle Schwarber, and Jake Cronenworth.

Where Is MLB’s All-Star Week Next Season?

MLB’s All-Star Week is one of the best in pro sports and one that baseball fans look forward to every year. This year’s festivities were special, which was to be expected with an event like this in a city like Los Angeles – it’s where all the stars are at, which is exactly what fans want to see.

Next year, MLB’s All-Star Week will be hosted by the Seattle Mariners and held at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington. It should be an exciting time for baseball fans in a city that’s on the rise in the sport’s world – already with the Seahawks and Mariners, but now the Kraken as well.
