William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault Have Scored 22 Goals in the 2023 NHL Playoffs — Here’s a Look Back at Each One!

The Vegas Golden Knights are only in their sixth season since joining the NHL as an expansion team in 2017, but they’re just a few wins away from coming out of the 2023 NHL Playoffs with their first ever Stanley Cup win – it’s their second trip to the Stanley Cup finals and first since their inaugural season.

The Knights have already defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 in the First Round, the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 in the Second Round, and the Dallas Stars 4-2 in the Western Conference Finals of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. They’re now pinned up against the Florida Panthers, who are this year’s Cinderella story as a No. 8 seed.

A majority of the Knights’ success during the 2023 NHL Playoffs can be credited to the offense being provided by linemates William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault – two of the original ‘Golden Misfits.’ They’ve combined for 22 goals during these playoffs, making franchise history in the process.

William Karlsson has played in all 19 games for the Vegas Golden Knights during the 2023 NHL Playoffs – which is good because they’ve needed him every step of the way. Through Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals, he has scored 10 goals and dished 5 assists for 15 total points – which ranks 6th on the team.

Nine of his goals have come at even-strength, while the 10th goal came on the powerplay. He has taken 40 shots and has a shooting percentage of 25% – proving that you don’t need to shoot often to score often. To honor his impressive and historic run these playoffs, let’s take a look back at each of his goals.

1. Game 1, First Round vs. Winnipeg Jets

On April 18, 2023, William Karlsson scored the only goal for the Golden Knights in their 1-5 loss to the Jets in Game 1 of the First Round of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It came with just four minutes left in the second period and helped cut the deficit in half – the Knights were down 1-2 heading into the final period.

Ivan Barbashev and Jonathan Marchessault picked up the assists on the goal, which was Karlsson’s first of the postseason. He ended up taking just two shots in 16:54 of ice time (19 shifts). The game was relatively close throughout, with two of the Jets’ goals coming in the final 90 seconds of the game.

2. Game 2, First Round vs. Winnipeg Jets

On April 20, 2023, William Karlsson scored the first of five goals for the Golden Knights in their 5-2 victory over the Jets in Game 2 of the First Round of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It came just six minutes into the second period and helped tie the game with plenty of time left – it was 1-1, but that didn’t last long.

Phil Kessel and Reilly Smith picked up the assists on the goal, which was Karlsson’s second of the postseason. With 150 seconds left, Karlsson picked up a primary assist on Mark Stone’s second goal of the period. Karlsson provided the spark in the first period and helped put it away in the third period.

3. Game 4, First Round vs. Winnipeg Jets

On April 24, 2023, William Karlsson scored the second of four goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-2 victory over the Jets in Game 4 of the First Round of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It came with roughly seven minutes left in the second period and gave Vegas a much-needed 2-1 lead – which they expanded upon.

Jonathan Marchessault picked up the primary assist, while Shea Theodore picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Karlsson’s third of the playoffs. He proved to be efficient with one goal on one shot and only spent a little over 13 minutes on the ice. The win gave the Knights a 3-1 series lead.

4. Game 5, First Round vs. Winnipeg Jets

On April 27, 2023, William Karlsson scored the third of four goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-1 victory over the Jets in Game 5 of the First Round of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It came less than five minutes into the second period and gave Vegas a commanding 4-0 lead in a series-clinching game.

Michael Amadio picked up the primary assist, while Reilly Smith picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Karlsson’s fourth of the playoffs. He, once again, proved to be efficient with just two shots in just over 16 minutes of ice time (22 shifts). The Knights advanced to the next round with the win.

5. Game 6, Second Round vs. Edmonton Oilers

On May 14, 2023, William Karlsson scored the fifth and final goal for the Golden Knights in their 5-2 victory over the Oilers in Game 6 of the Second Round of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. He failed to score in the first five games of the series, but didn’t miss his empty-net opportunity with just 40 seconds remaining.

Nicolas Roy was handed the primary assist, while Reilly Smith picked up the secondary assist for the goal – which was Karlsson’s fifth of the postseason. The Knights were down 2-1 after the first period, but Jonathan Marchessault scored a hat trick in the second period and the Knights never looked back.

6. Game 1, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 19, 2023, William Karlsson scored the first of four goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-3 overtime victory over the Stars in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. It came roughly nine minutes into the second period and helped the Knights knot the game up at 1-1 with plenty of time left.

Zach Whitecloud was handed the primary assist, while Nicolas Roy picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Karlsson’s sixth of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It was the second game in a row that Karlsson scored a goal, marking the third time he scored in back-to-back games during the 2023 playoffs.

7. Game 1, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 19, 2023, William Karlsson scored the second of four goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-3 overtime victory over the Stars in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. His second goal of the game came just one minute into the third period and helped give the Knights a 2-1 lead with just 19 minutes left.

Alec Martinez was handed the primary assist, while Alex Pietrangelo picked up the secondary assist for the goal – which was Karlsson’s seventh of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. The Stars tied the game at 3-3 with just two minutes left in the game, but Brett Howden scored the game-winning goal for Vegas in overtime.

8. Game 4, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 25, 2023, William Karlsson scored the first of two goals for the Golden Knights in their 2-3 loss to the Stars in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. It came just four minutes into a series-clinching game and came after being held scoreless for the past two games. It was his third goal of the series.

Reilly Smith was handed the primary assist, while Nicolas Roy picked up the secondary assist for the goal – which was Karlsson’s eighth of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. And while the Knights held a 2-1 lead halfway through the second period, the Stars scored two unanswered – Vegas was up 3-1 in the series.

9. Game 6, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 29, 2023, William Karlsson scored the second of six goals for the Golden Knights in their 6-0 victory over the Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. It came on the power play – halfway through the first period – and gave the Knights an early 2-0 lead in an important series-clinching game.

Nicolas Roy was handed the primary assist, while Reilly Smith picked up the secondary assist for the goal – which was Karlsson’s ninth goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It was also the fourth time Roy assisted on a Karlsson goal and the fifth time Smith assisted on a Karlsson goal during the 2023 postseason.

10. Game 6, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

Michael Amadio was given the primary and only assist for the goal – which was Karlsson’s 10th goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It was a historic goal, marking the most goals scored by a single player in a single postseason in Knights’ franchise history – a record that wouldn’t last for long, but more on that below!

It came just five minutes into the first period and just three minutes after the Oilers took an early lead – knotting the game at 1-1 with plenty of time left.

Jack Eichel picked up the primary and lone assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s first of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It was a much-needed goal for Marchessault, who hadn’t scored in the Knights’ First Round series against the Winnipeg Jets and went scoreless in the first two games of this series.

2. Game 3, Second Round vs. Edmonton Oilers

On May 8, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the second of five goals for the Golden Knights in their 5-1 victory over the Oilers in Game 3 of the Second Round. His second goal of the game came with just one minute left in the first period and just 14 minutes after he tied the game with his first goal (see above).

Jack Eichel picked up the primary and lone assist on the goal (much like the first goal) – which was Marchessault’s second goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It gave the team a 2-1 lead after falling down early and they rode that lead all the way to the end. Marchessault had two even-strength goals on six shots.

3. Game 6, Second Round vs. Edmonton Oilers

On May 14, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the second of five goals for the Golden Knights in their 5-2 victory over the Oilers in Game 6 of the Second Round. It came just 4:26 into the second period and helped tie the game up for Vegas, who fell down 1-2 in the first period after taking a 1-0 lead early.

Ivan Barbashev was handed the primary assist, while Shea Theodore picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s third goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It came at the right time and spurred quite an impressive period for the 32-year-old in an important, series-clinching game on the road.

4. Game 6, Second Round vs. Edmonton Oilers

On May 14, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the third of five goals for the Golden Knights in their 5-2 victory over the Oilers in Game 6 of the Second Round. It came roughly eight minutes into the second period and just three minutes after he tied the game with his first goal of the period (see above).

Alec Martinez got the primary assist, while Ivan Barbashev got the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s fourth goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It gave the Knights their first lead since scoring 24 seconds into the game – the Oilers tied it up 30 seconds later and took the lead two minutes later.

5. Game 6, Second Round vs. Edmonton Oilers

On May 14, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the third of five goals for Vegas in their 5-2 victory over the Oilers in Game 6 of the Second Round. It came with less than two minutes left in the second period and marked an incredible achievement for Marchessault – who scored a hat trick in the period.

Alex Pietrangelo was handed the primary assist, while Jack Eichel picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s fifth goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. This goal really helped open things up for Vegas, who entered the period down 2-1, but exited that same period with a 4-2 lead.

6. Game 2, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 21, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the second of three goals for the Golden Knights in their 3-2 overtime victory over the Stars in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. Jack Eichel was handed the primary assist, while Ivan Barbashev picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s sixth goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. With time running down and the Knights desperate, Marchessault came through with a clutch goal that helped them win it in overtime.

7. Game 3, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 23, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the first of four goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-0 victory over the Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. It came just one minute into the first period and helped set the tone as the Knights went on to score three goals in the first seven minutes.

Jack Eichel was handed the primary assist, while Ivan Barbashev picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s seventh goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It marked the fifth assist for Eichel and fourth assist for Barbashev in the postseason (and that’s just counting Marchessault goals).

8. Game 4, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 25 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the second of two goals for the Golden Knights in a 2-3 overtime loss to the Stars in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. It came halfway through the second period and helped give the Knights a 2-1 lead – unfortunately, that lead didn’t last very long.

Brayden McNabb was handed the primary assist, while Jack Eichel picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s eighth goal (six of which were assisted by Eichel) of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It also extended Marchessault’s goal streak to three games, but wasn’t enough to get a win.

9. Game 6, Conference Finals vs. Dallas Stars

On May 29, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the fourth of six goals for the Golden Knights in their 6-0 victory over the Stars in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. It came halfway through the second period and extended the Knights’ lead to 4-0 as they looked to close out the Stars in six games.

Ivan Barbashev was handed the primary assist, while Nicolas Hague picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s ninth goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It also marked the fifth time Barbashev assisted on a Marchessault goal. The Knights won and advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.

10. Game 1, Stanley Cup Finals vs. Florida Panthers

On June 3, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the first of five goals for the Golden Knights in their 5-2 victory over the Panthers in Game 1 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. It came with just three minutes left in the first period and helped erase a 0-1 deficit – the Panthers scored halfway through the first period.

Chandler Stephenson was handed the primary assist, while Shea Theodore picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s 10th goal and first power play goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. He also tied William Karlsson for most goals in a single postseason in franchise history.

11. Game 2, Stanley Cup Finals vs. Florida Panthers

On June 5, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the first of seven goals for the Golden Knights in their 7-2 victory over the Panthers in Game 2 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. It came on the power play, just seven minutes into the game, and helped set the tone for what was to come in Vegas’ blowout win.

Chandler Stephenson was handed the primary assist, while Jack Eichel picked up the secondary assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s 11th goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. With the goal, he took sole possession of the Knights’ franchise record for most goals by a single skater in a single postseason.

12. Game 2, Stanley Cup Finals vs. Florida Panthers

On June 5, 2023, Jonathan Marchessault scored the fifth of seven goals for the Golden Knights in their 7-2 victory over the Panthers in Game 2 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Finals. It came just two minutes into the third period and helped regain momentum after the Panthers scored their first goal two minutes prior.

Jack Eichel was handed the primary and lone assist on the goal – which was Marchessault’s 12th goal of the 2023 NHL Playoffs. It not only extended his franchise record, but it marked the eighth time Eichel assisted on a Marchessault goal in these playoffs. And I have a feeling these two aren’t quite done yet.

And What a 2023 NHL Playoffs It Has Been

The 2023 NHL Playoffs have been nothing short of exciting and a lot of that has to do with the play of the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers. Despite being a No. 1 seed, many people didn’t expect the Knights to get here. Meanwhile, the Panthers are putting together one of the most improbable title runs.

Both teams are playing in their second Stanley Cup Finals and are both searching for their first title in franchise history, but only one team will walk away with the ultimate prize. With the Knights winning Game 1 of the seven-game series and holding home rink advantage, things are looking good so far for Vegas.

With that said, you can’t count the Panthers out just yet. They’ve been in this position before and were even down 3-1 to the Boston Bruins in the first round before winning three straight. They had won 11 of their previous 12 games before their loss in Game 1, so be careful – this team can get hot in a hurry.
