In the ten years of their relationship, Cavallari and Cutler spent seven of them married. Tying the knot in 2013, they welcomed three children into the world before ultimately separating in 2020. Following two years of growth and self-reflection, the best-selling author opened up about her true feelings towards her ex-husband.

The television personality recently sat down with Alex Cooper, host of the Call Her Daddy podcast, and discussed her wishes for herself and Cutler. According to the woman herself, it was a toxic relationship, but she continues to uphold a level of respect for him in order to properly co-parent.

“It was toxic. I think period, end of story. That’s all I kind of need to say,” she relayed. “Because I have three kids with him, I’m very careful about what I say.”

“If you and I didn’t have microphones in front of us, I’d f—ing tell you but you know, that’s their dad, and my oldest Googles us now, and I just want to be very careful,” Cavallari continued, explaining her reasoning behind choosing to be civil. “My mom never said anything bad about my dad growing up and I really respected that, and I want to be that kind of mom.”

As the podcast continued, Cavallari also shared what she looks for in a partner. If her relationship with the NFL quarterback taught her anything, she learned that happiness is the most essential aspect of a partnership. “I think with any relationship you just have to realize what are deal-breakers for you, what’s important to you, and what’s not,” she began. “I was really unhappy and that was the bottom line, and I was in an unhealthy relationship. And so that to me is not worth it.”

However, like the good mother she is, Cavallari’s biggest point of emphasis was her children’s happiness. The mother relayed that she wants to set a good example for her kids, so a loving home environment with a positive partner is crucial.

She shared, “I wanted them to see me happy and see me eventually — not right now — but eventually, see me with someone who really respects me and treats me the way I need to be treated.”

Cavallari added the fact that since Cutler’s happiness can directly impact her children’s quality of life, she will not wish poorly on him or his future. “I hope that he finds someone, I really do,” the reality star stated. “I mean, I want him happy. My kids benefit from that, you know. So I hope that he gets remarried. I mean, I really do.”
