Inside Mitch Marner’s Record-Breaking Points Streak and How It Ranks Among the Longest NHL Points Streak of All-Time

Inside Mitch Marner’s Record-Breaking Points Streak and How It Ranks Among the Longest NHL Points Streak of All-Time

Between October 27 and December 13, Toronto Maple Leafs’ right winger Mitchell Marner wrote his name in the history books when he became just the 12th NHL player to record a points streak of at least 23 games. It was an impressive seven weeks of hockey, but how does his points streak rank all-time?

Before we get into that, let’s first marvel at the accomplishment – after all, scoring a point in 23-straight games isn’t easy to do. During that span, he recorded 11 goals, 21 assists, and 32 points total – which included 2 power play goals, 10 power play assists, 1 shorthanded goal, and 2 game-winning goals.

Not only that, but his team went 15-2-6 during his 23-game points streak – that’s right, 6 of the team’s 8 losses came in overtime. In the 18 games he has played since, Marner has scored a point in 13 of them (5 goals, 14 assists, 19 points total) – proving that he can put up points consistently at just 25 years old.

Putting together a points streak like the ones we’re going to talk about below doesn’t just happen to anyone. It takes a certain level of confidence, skill, patience, and hard work. Of course, it also takes a good rapport with your teammates because you’re not going to be the one scoring every single night.

Just look at Mitchell Marner – he didn’t score in 13 of his 23 games during the points streak. If it weren’t for his chemistry with his teammates, he wouldn’t have gotten all those assists and his points streak would’ve ended very quickly. That’s why it’s not just an achievement for Marner, but his team as a whole.

Like we mentioned above, only 12 NHL players have recorded a points streak of at least 23 games in the history of the sport. It’s a feat that has been accomplished 20 times in total, with three players doing it more than once. In fact, Mitchell Marner is just the third active player with a 23-game points streak.

With that said, let’s take a look at the 20 different times an NHL player put together a points streak of at least 23 games – starting with the man of the hour.

20. Mitch Marner – 23 games

Like we mentioned above, Mitchell Marner recorded a 23-game points streak with the Toronto Maple Leafs – beginning on October 27, 2022 and coming to an end on December 13, 2022. He scored 11 goals, 21 assists, and 32 total points during the streak – including nine games with at least two points.

In doing so, Marner broke a Maple Leafs’ franchise record that was held by Darryl Sittler (1978) and Eddie Olczyk (1989-90) – they each put together an 18-game points streak. Mitchell Marner now has 156 goals, 356 assists, and 512 points in 476 games in his seven-year career with the Maple Leafs.

19. Guy Lafleur – 23 games

Guy Lafleur recorded a 23-game points streak with the Montreal Canadiens that began on November 23, 1978 and came to an end on January 13, 1979. He scored 19 goals, 21 assists, and 40 total points during the impressive streak – including 13 games with at least two points and five straight multi-point games.

He also had a four-game multi-point streak that included a three-point game and four-point game (hat trick) in back-to-back outings against the Buffalo Sabres. He scored two hat tricks during the streak and led his team to a 16-4-3 record that included an eight-game winning streak. He’s on this list twice.

18. Wayne Gretzky – 23 games

Wayne Gretzky recorded a 23-game points streak with the Los Angeles Kings that began on October 6, 1988 and came to an end on November 26, 1988. He scored 18 goals, 33 assists, and 51 total points during the streak – he had at least two points in all but six games and even had a six-point game.

Gretzky couldn’t have found a better way to start the season – the streak began at the start of the 1988-89 season. His team went 15-8-0 during the streak and while he didn’t score a hat trick, he did have two goals on five occasions. Get used to seeing his name on this list because it’s basically his list.

17. Wayne Gretzky – 24 games

And what do you know, it’s Wayne Gretzky for a second time. He recorded a 24-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on January 13, 1982 and came to an end on March 3, 1982. His team went 15-4-5 during the streak and he scored 28 goals, 38 assists, and 66 total points in that span.

Gretzky wasn’t playing around, either. He scored a hat trick four times during this run and had at least two points in all but four games. What’s even more impressive is his six games with five points each – five of those games came in a row. I’ll say it again, he put up five points in five consecutive games – unreal!

16. Bernie Nicholls – 25 games

Bernie Nicholls recorded a 25-game points streak with the Los Angeles Kings that began on October 16, 1984 and came to an end on December 10, 1984. His team had a 12-9-4 record and he scored 21 goals, 19 assists, and 40 total points during the stretch – including nine games with at least two points.

Nicholls started the 1984-85 season with zero points through three games – and that’s when his streak started. He scored four goals on November 13th and then scored a hat trick on December 5th. During the impressive streak, he had five power play goals, 6 power play assists, and two game-winning goals.

15. Brett Hull – 25 games

Brett Hull recorded a 25-game points streak with the St. Louis Blues that began on November 28, 1991 and came to an end on January 23, 1992. His team went 12-10-3 and he scored 31 goals, 15 assists, and 46 total points during the stretch – he scored at least two points 12 times and scored five hat tricks.

Hull finished the streak with 10 power play goals, 1 shorthanded goal, and four game-winning goals. He took 129 shots and shot an impressive 24% when on the ice – that means he was scoring every four shots he took. There wasn’t much that was going to stop him and he proved it for 25 games straight.

14. Sidney Crosby – 25 games

Sidney Crosby, the first active player on this list (besides Mitchell Marner), recorded a 25-game points streak with the Pittsburgh Penguins that began on November 5, 2010 and came to an end on December 28, 2010. His team went 19-5-1 and he scored 26 goals, 24 assists, and 50 total points in that span.

Crosby scored at least two points in 16 of those games and had at least two goals on six occasions – including two hat tricks just one game apart. He had seven power play goals, 1 shorthanded goal, and three game-winning goals – taking 98 shots and shooting 26.5% during the stretch. He was unstoppable.

13. Bryan Trottier – 25 games

Bryan Trottier recorded a 25-game points streak with the New York Islanders that began on January 21, 1982 and came to an end on March 10, 1982. His team had a 22-1-2 record and he scored 28 goals, 27 assists, and 55 total points during the stretch – he had at last two points in all but eight of those games.

Trottier wasn’t the only one on fire during this streak – his entire team was meshing well together. They only lost one game and tied twice, going on winning streaks of 15, 2, and 5 games. He scored one hat trick and also had an impressive five-goal game – tied for the third-most in a single game in NHL history.

12. Wayne Gretzky – 25 games

Wayne Gretzky is back and is making his third appearance on this list. He recorded a 25-game points streak with the Los Angeles Kings that began on February 8, 1991 and came to an end on March 28, 1991. His team went 15-5-5 and he scored 8 goals, 49 assists, and 58 points during the stretch.

Gretzky put this streak together at the end of the 1990-91 season and technically extended it to 26 games, if you count the first game of the following season. He didn’t score as many goals as we’re used to seeing, but he had at least two points in all but six games and had more than four points twice.

11. Patrick Kane – 26 games

Patrick Kane, the third active player on this list, recorded a 26-game points streak with the Chicago Blackhawks that began on October 17, 2015 and came to an end on December 13, 2015. His team went 15-7-4 and he scored 16 goals, 24 assists, and 40 total points during the impressive stretch of games.

Kane had at least two points in 10 of those games and had a four-point game on November 8th. He finished the streak with nine power play goals and three game-winning goals – taking 86 shots and shooting 18.6% when on the ice. Kane also had a 20-game points streak during the 2018-19 season.

10. Paul Coffey – 28 games

Paul Coffey recorded a 28-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on November 27, 1985 and came to an end on January 25, 1986. His team had a 19-7-2 record and he scored 16 goals, 39 assists, and 55 total points – he had at least two points in 16 games, including six straight games.

Even more impressive was his back-to-back five-point outings – he had three goals and two assists on December 20th and five assists on December 22nd. He had two power play goals, two shorthanded goals, one game-winning goal, 12 power play assists, and one shorthanded assist during the stretch.

9. Mario Lemieux – 28 games

Mario Lemieux recorded a 28-game points streak with the Pittsburgh Penguins that began on January 11, 1986 and ended on March 15, 1986. The streak began while Paul Coffey was in the latter-half of his streak. His team went 13-11-4 and he scored 21 goals, 38 assists, and 59 total points during the run.

Compared to others on this list, Lemieux’s team wasn’t winning a lot of games during his streak. Still, he had six power play goals, 25 power play assists, and one game-winning goal. He took 109 shots during the span and shot 19.3% when on the ice. It was his second season in the NHL – he was 20 years old.

8. Guy Lafleur – 28 games

Guy Lafleur, in his second appearance on this list, recorded a 28-game points streak with the Montreal Canadiens that began on February 1, 1977 and came to an end on April 3, 1977 – this came two seasons before his 23-game points streak. He scored 19 goals, 42 assists, and 61 total points during the streak.

Lafleur’s 28-game points streak came at the end of the season as he was on an absolute tear. He had at least two points in all but seven games, had three points on four occasions, and had four points on four occasions. His team went 23-1-4. It technically continued the following season and ended at 30 games.

7. Wayne Gretzky – 28 games

Wayne Gretzky, making his fourth appearance on this list, recorded a 28-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on February 3, 1985 and came to an end on April 6, 1985. His team had a 12-11-5 record and he scored 20 goals, 43 assists, and 63 total points during the incredible stretch.

Gretzky scored at least two points in all but 10 games during this streak and scored at least two goals on four occasions – including a hat trick. The streak came at the end of the regular season and continued the streak to 37 games after scoring a point in the first nine games of the playoffs – including a 7-point game.

6. Steve Yzerman – 28 games

Steve Yzerman recorded a 28-game points streak with the Detroit Red Wings that began on November 1, 1988 and came to an end on January 4, 1989. His team had a 15-11-2 record and he scored 29 goals, 36 assists, and 65 total points during the stretch – he had at least two points on 21 separate occasions.

Yzerman also scored at least two goals on six occasions, including two hat tricks (November 4th and November 12th). He finished the streak with eight power play goals, one short-handed goal, and four game-winning goals. He took a total of 132 shots from start to finish and shot 22.0% when on the ice.

5. Mats Sundin – 30 games

Mats Sundin is just one of three NHL players to record a points streak of at least 30 games – his streak began on October 8, 1992 and came to an end on December 10, 1992. His team had a 15-10-5 record and he scored 21 goals, 25 assists, and 46 total points – it was just his third season in the league.

Sundin had at least two points in 10 of those games (one-third of them) and scored at least two goals on four occasions – including a hat trick on December 5th. He finished the streak with eight power play goals, three shorthanded goals, and four game-winning goals. It was quite the way to start a season.

4. Wayne Gretzky – 30 games

Wayne Gretzky, making his fifth appearance on this list, recorded a 30-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on October 5, 1982 and came to an end on December 7, 1982. His team went 14-10-6 and he scored 24 goals, 52 assists, and 76 total points during the impressive stretch.

Gretzky had at least two points in all but eight of those games and scored at least two goals five times – including a hat trick (which was really a 6-point game). He had 13 other games with at least three points (not including the 6-point game), scored six power play goals, and two game-winning goals in that span.

3. Wayne Gretzky – 39 games

Wayne Gretzky, making his sixth appearance on this list, recorded a 39-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on November 3, 1985 and came to an end on January 25, 1986. His team had a 26-9-4 record and he scored 33 goals, 75 assists, and 108 total assists during the incredible run.

Gretzky had at least two points in all but eight games during the streak and at least two goals on eight occasions – he had a hat trick on three occasions. His most impressive game was a 7-point (all assists) game, but he also put up 6 points on two occasions and had five points in back-to-back games.

2. Mario Lemieux – 46 games

Mario Lemieux, making his second appearance on this list, recorded a 46-game points streak with the Pittsburgh Penguins that began on October 31, 1989 (Halloween Day) and came to an end on february 11, 1990. His team had a 23-21-2 record and he scored 39 goals, 64 assists, and 103 total points.

Lemieux had at least two points in 30 of those games and scored at least twice in six of them – including two hat tricks (December 2nd and February 2nd) and a four-goal game on January 8th. He finished the impressive streak with 13 power play goals, 3 shorthanded goals, and three game-winning goals.

1. Wayne Gretzky – 51 games

Wayne Gretzky, making his seventh appearance on this list, recorded an impressive 51-game points streak with the Edmonton Oilers that began on October 5, 1983 and came to an end on January 27, 1984. His team went 38-8-5 and he scored 61 goals, 92 assists, and 153 points during the unbelievable streak.

Gretzky’s 51-game points streak is one of the most unbreakable NHL records of all-time. He went on to score at least one point in all but three games during the 1983-84 regular season and at least one point in all but 3 of his 19 playoff games en route to a Stanley Cup win. It’s something we may never see again.

Of the 12 players listed above, only three of them are actively playing in the NHL today – Mitchell Marner, Sidney Crosby, and Patrick Kane. They’ve been able to accomplish something very few players have accomplished in the history of the NHL. With that said, there are a few active players that came close.

In fact, Kane came close to doing it a second time in 2019, putting together a points streak of 20 games. 12 years before Kane did it, Paul Stastny put together a 20-game points streak of his own. Three other players came close with Crosby, Taylor Hall, and Corey Perry putting together a 19-game points streak.
