Gymnast, Wife, Mother of 2: Olympic Medalist Competes at US Gymnastics Championships After 8-Year Retirement

Chellsie Memmel is an Olympic medalist. She won a silver medal in the 2008 Olympics and is also, as Memmel states in her Twitter bio, a:

“Wife. Mom of 2…3x World Champion. Coach. Judge. Gymnastics lover. *Training again after 8 yr retirement!”

You heard that last part right. After eight years, she’s back on the mat. Chasing her dreams. And we all are so happy for her.

“Last day at the gym before heading to Championships….as an athlete…Seriously a sentence I didn’t think I would day or type out again,” Memmel said in a tweet on June 1. “Hoping to have a few less nerves, a bit more fun and a better performance!!…”.

Memmel competed at the 2021 US Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, coming out of retirement.

And she had her family by her side throughout this comeback journey. Her dad was her coach (as she tweeted) and had her husband, her kids, her family as a support system in getting back to the sport she loves.

“I cannot thank everyone enough for the support/love/encouragement on this crazy journey of mine,” Memmel said a series of tweets after competing. “It has truly taken a village to help me get to this point and…I love every person in mine…Just another big thank you to my family for the unending support and my husband & kids for the being the best cheerleaders.”

Good for Memmel for going back to her sport. For breaking barriers, obstacles or preconceived notions, and competing in a sport she just so happens to be an Olympian in.

And it’s not over yet.

“I am not shutting the door on gymnastics and plan to stay in the gym and see what more I can do. It has been too much fun to stop now and I will not be done because of a bad night, ” Memmel said. Thank you again everyone…”

Memmel ended up finishing 25th at the championships but she didn’t finish last! And it was the same competition where Simone Biles ended up winning, whose sight is set at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

“Loved the World Champion picture….never would have believed you if you had told me we would all be competing at the same time,” Memmel said in that series of tweets. “…It was not my night tonight…..but I am proud of everything I have accomplished and that I put myself out there again.”

And we are proud of this mom, this wife, this Olympic gymnast who “put (herself) out there” and showed that you can do what you love no matter what season of life you’re in, putting in the work, and chasing your dreams.
