Today personality Craig Melvin recently allowed 8½-year-old son Delano to interview Phoenix Suns player Chris Paul and it was amazing.
This past week, Delano Melvin was a correspondent for NBC Nightly News: Kids Edition and among his interviewees was the 37-year-old NBA star. Asking one of the most pressing questions that every kid wants to know, the child posed, “What were you like as a kid?”
“It’s probably a different answer, if you ask me and if you ask my parents,” Paul replied. “I was active, very active. And I had an older brother, I had an older brother who I fought all the time.”
Continuing, the Suns player added that he always played both football and basketball throughout his youth. He also informed his audience that he was always intellectually inclined, but his habit of talking in class created a disturbance.
“I was a pretty good student, but I think I used to always get in trouble for talking in class. So my grades would be good, but I’d have unsatisfactory as far as behavior,” he explained.
Delano then proceeded to point out the similarities between Paul and Melvin, responding, “That sounds like my dad.”

Pushing the conversation on, the 8-year-old boy asked the NBA player what inspires him. According to Paul, his family is one of the driving forces for his success. “Obviously, my kids, my wife, but the first person who always pops into my head is my dad. My dad is like my end all, be all,” he shared.

“For me, being 37 years old, there’s going to come a point in time in your life too, where you feel like you’re grown. You probably gonna be about 13 and start talking back,” the professional athlete continued. “I got kids of my own, got my own family, but my dad is still like my hero. If you are fortunate enough to have that, from the looks of it, you’re on the right track.”
After Paul made Delano giggle with his wholesome commentary, the interview sadly had to be concluded. The boy proceeded to thank the basketball star for his time. To Paul’s surprise, Delano’s father appeared and also thanked him for his time. At the sight of Melvin, the 37-year-old was even a little starstruck.
“I gotta tell my wife,” he said with a laugh.
