According to his teammate, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a very particular routine he follows before every NFL game.
After Kansas City drafted the Philadelphia Eagles and took home this year’s Super Bowl championship title, backup quarterback Chad Henne announced his retirement. However, in his retirement announcement, Henne did not hold back the personal details of Mahomes and the specifics of his game-day prep.
“He has a baseball background, so he has to have a certain thing each and every day,” the 37-year-old retired quarterback shared during an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of The Adam Schefter Podcast. “He comes in. He does his work. His notes are written out a certain way. Same pair of underwear, which probably not a lot of people know, on game day. He’s been wearing it since I’ve been part of it.”
Wait, what? Does the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback really wear the same pair of underwear for every game? Like many other people, this detail particularly stood out to Schefter, and he begged for more information on the odd tradition.
“They’re red. I’m not sure if they’re Hanes or if they’re Lululemon, but it’s one or two of those brands, and ever since he comes in the locker room — boom, it’s right there,” Henne explained. “I’ll be stretching, and like I said, you just glimpse up, and you’re like, ‘Damn, kid’s wearing them again.’ This definitely has to be a superstition and a good-luck charm, for sure.”

Although the backup NFL quarterback was certain the red underwear is a symptom of superstition, he did not downplay Mahomes’ dedication to his team. In fact, he emphasized the amount of work he puts into the franchise and the level of preparation he puts into each game. “His preparation is unbelievable, how he goes about it,” Henne said of Mahomes.
Continuing, he noted that the 2023 MVP studies Andy Reid’s call sheet before each game. “He knows exactly how many plays are in each section on [head coach] Andy Reid’s call sheet. If it’s off by one play, it’s going to be mentioned that week,” he shared. “He dives into it deeply, and it’s fun to watch each and every day.”
Needless to say, Mahomes is an essential force on the Kansas City team.
