Team USA Wins Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow; Who Are the Current Best American Golfers?

The Presidents Cup is one of the most exciting events on the golf calendar, bringing together the best American golfers and pinning them up against the best international golfers. It gets competitive as golfers fight for the pride of their country, but they also have fun out there.

The 2022 Presidents Cup was held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina – its first year hosting the event. The festivities began on September 22 and ended on September 25. Davis Love III captained Team USA, while Trevor Immelman captained Team International.

Fans had to wait an extra year for the 14th installment of the Presidents Cup – it was originally scheduled for 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic got in the way of those plans. Nonetheless, play continued in 2022 and it turned out to be a decisive 17.5-12.5 victory for Team USA.

Who Are the Best American Golfers of All-Time?

We now know who the best American golfers are in 2022, but who are the best American golfers of all-time? That list would consist of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin, Phil Mickelson, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, and Ben Hogan.

The PGA TOUR Player of the Year, also known as the Jack Nicklaus Award, was introduced in 1990 and is administered by the PGA TOUR. The award is not to be confused with the PGA Player of the Year, which was introduced in 1948 and is administered by the PGA of America.

The winner of the PGA Tour Player of the Year is voted on by the players by way of ballot. Three players are nominated, while other players vote for who they think is most deserving of the three – in order to vote, the golfer must’ve played in at least 15 official FedExCup events this year.

Since its introduction, 18 players have been named PGA TOUR Player of the Year – five players have won the award more than once. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the 17 golfers – not named Scottie Scheffler – who have been named PGA Tour Player of the Year since 1990.

17. Patrick Cantlay (2021)

Being named the PGA TOUR Player of the Year is a massive honor for any golfer – an honor that only 18 players have achieved and an honor that usually doesn’t come to the same golfer twice. With that said, Scottie Scheffler is in line to be one of the few that does exactly that.

At just 26 years old, Scheffler still has a lot of his best golf to play, so I can see him winning at least one more Jack Nicklaus Trophy in the years ahead. The same goes for Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Patrick Cantlay – any of them could win the award for the second time.
