On New Year’s Eve, ESPN’s broadcast of the College Football Playoff was abruptly interrupted when the host’s phone began ringing. On the other line was Grete Griffin, wife of the retired NFL quarterback, who happened to be nine months pregnant. Not hesitating to answer the phone, the former athlete was quick to evacuate the game after his wife dropped the bombshell on him: she was going into labor.

“Sorry guys, uh, I gotta go. My wife’s going into labor,” he announced before promptly breaking out into a swift run. He even took to Twitter to post the entire dramatic exit.

Although it was clear he had places to be, Grete would later announce on Instagram that their child was never actually born. “First off let’s start by saying that even though baby girl tried to make a dramatic entrance last night into 2023, she decided it wasn’t time yet,” she wrote on social media.

As she continued her post, she paid tribute to Griffin and honored his fatherly duty, even though it was a false alarm. “I gave him a call in the middle of him being on live TV fully expecting to not get a hold of him but I guess when your wife is 9 months pregnant and calls you you answer the phone no matter what you’re doing,” she began. “All I had to say was the word ‘labor’ and this man STOPPED CALLING A BOWL GAME and took off sprinting to the car to get to the airport and get on a 4-hour flight to make it home.”

Grete concluded her statement by letting Griffin know she loves him and appreciates him. “I love you more than life baby and I am so beyond grateful for how you love me, care for me, and what you sacrifice for me,” the mother said oh her husband. She added, “My HERO!!!”

The Griffins have been married since 2018 and welcomed their first child into the world in July 2017. As of today, they have two daughters and expecting their third any day now. Needless to say, the former Heisman Trophy winner is willing to drop everything to be present during his wife’s birth.
