If there’s one thing world-renowned athlete Serena Williams loves more than tennis, it’s her daughter Olympia. So, when the 40-year-old mother showed up to the 2022 U.S. Open in a matching outfit with her child, the world was gushing with awe.
When Williams showed up for her final U.S. Open, Olympia, who turns 5 on September 1st, was right by her mother’s side. In fact, she showed her support by twinning with her mother in a bedazzled black Nike dress. Additionally, Olympia wore her hair in white beads at the bottom of her braids, paying tribute to the hairstyle Williams opted for when she won her first U.S. Open in 1999.
This U.S. Open was particularly special for the tennis star because it is her last time appearing in the competition. Earlier this month, the athlete announced her retirement after decades of professional playing. And, she cited a desire to expand her family as a driving force for her absence from the sport.
In an essay published by Vogue, the mother explained that her daughter has begun asking for a baby sister. In the mother’s opinion, she cannot have another child and continue to play tennis at the professional level. “I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair…But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give,” she wrote.

“I’ve been reluctant to admit that I have to move on from playing tennis,” Williams announced. “One thing I’m not going to do is sugarcoat this. I know that a lot of people are excited about and look forward to retiring, and I really wish I felt that way.”
The 23-time Grand Slam champion relayed that she is choosing to look at leaving the industry as an evolution, rather than a retirement. “It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me,” the mother shared, regarding the word retirement. “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution.“
Williams then explained, “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”
