Olympic gymnast Simone Biles gifted the dad of one of her Team USA teammates an incredible gift. Touched by the relationship Sunisa “Suni” Lee has with her father, the 24-year-old decorated athlete decided to present Lee’s father with a brand new wheelchair.
“Hi, Mr. Lee, it’s Simone. I love your daughter, Suni, so much and I know how much she loves you,” Biles shared with John Lee in a video he watched from his tablet, according to TODAY. She went on to state, “You have done so much for her so I reached out to my friends at the Today show to see if we could do something special for you. Hope you like it.”
“Oh, my God. Oh my, that is awesome,” John exclaimed after hearing the exciting news that the wheelchair was custom built to fit his exact needs. In 2019, John suffered a spinal cord injury when he attempted to help a friend trim a tree. Since then, he has lived his life in a wheelchair.
John often times need assistance from his son, as his previous chair was manual, but now he gets to sport an upgraded electric chair. “Now you don’t need me to push you anymore,” he said.
When he has ushered down the driveway, thank you signs were also plastered all about and he got to take his new item for a whip around the block. Once he returned from his first test drive, John shared, “Well, this is amazing. Thank you, guys.”
John Lee is appreciative of Simone Biles’ relationship with his daughter
Suni Lee brought home three Olympic medals from the 2020 Tokyo Games. Her father attributes Simone Biles as the reason she has been able to be so successful in gymnastics, as Biles has consistently lent support to Lee. John commented at the time of his daughter’s gold medal win, “I want to tell her team that no matter what, you all support her and I want to tell Simone that she truly is the GOAT because she let my baby girl bring the gold medal.”
Even Suni Lee was shocked to be bringing home a gold medal. The 18-year-old explained, “Coming into this competition, I didn’t even think that I could be competing for a gold medal. I was coming to compete for a silver medal. To be here, it’s crazy.”
However, Simone Biles is not shocked to see Lee’s talent rewarded. Biles shared, “I think America will fall in love with her because she has such an inspiring story.”
