Tampa Bay Rays Tie MLB Record With 13-Straight Wins to Begin the Year -- Here's How They Did It!

Tampa Bay Rays Tie MLB Record With 13-Straight Wins to Begin the Year — Here’s How They Did It!

The Tampa Bay Rays opened the 2023 season as one of the favorites to win the World Series – boasting a healthy balance of reliable pitching and quality batters. The only question was whether they would live up to the hype or crack under pressure. While it’s still too early in the season I think we have our answer!

The Rays ended up starting the year on a historic note by winning their first 13 games – that’s right, they began the season 13-0! Their impressive 13-0 start tied an MLB record for longest winning streak to start a season – matching the Atlanta Braves, who did it in 1982, and Milwaukee Brewers, who did it in 1987.

Of course, those winning streaks are just a modern-day record and pale in comparison to the 1884 St. Louis Maroons – who opened the season with a 20-0 record. Nonetheless, the Rays ended up breaking a franchise record for longest overall winning streak – which was set at 12 straight wins in the 2004 season.

Recapping the Tampa Bay Rays’ Record-Tying Winning Streak

Getting a win in the MLB is never easy and getting a series sweep is a difficult task – after all, we only see a little more than 200 sweeps each season across the MLB. That’s what makes the Tampa Bay Rays’ start to the 2023 season so special – they strung together four consecutive series sweeps out the gate.

“Pretty amazing. No doubt when you do something like that, you’re playing really well. And there’s not one part of our game right now that we don’t feel good about,” said manager Kevin Cash. “To go on a run like this, everything’s got to be clicking, and you’ve got to get contributions from all parts of your roster.”

And it’s not like their wins were close – 11 of their 13 wins to start the season were by at least four runs and they outscored their opponents 101-30 (a difference of 71 runs). Even more impressive, they held a lead in 111 of their 117 innings played during that streak and hit 32 home runs in those first 13 games.

What’s Next for the Tampa Bay Rays?

The Tampa Bay Rays’ impressive streak came to an end on April 14, when the team lost 3-6 to the Toronto Blue Jays. They went on to lose two of their three games against the Blue Jays, suffering their first series loss of the season, and followed that up with an 8-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on April 17.

Despite losing three games in a four-day stretch, the Tampa Bay Rays bounced back and won the final two games of their three-game series against the Reds. Through the first 19 games of the season, they boast a 16-3 record and had their first day off since April 5 – after the team won their sixth straight game.

With the way the Tampa Bay Rays are playing right now, they’ve emerged as a clear favorite to win the AL East and are certainly among the favorites competing for a World Series title. Considering they’ve never won a World Series before, this could be the year they do it – though there’s a lot of season left!

Cincinnati Reds’ Win Streak Ends at 12 Games — Here’s a Look Back at the Incredible Streak

When the 2023 MLB regular season began on March 28, no one expected the Cincinnati Reds to contend for much of anything – let alone a spot in the postseason. And that’s exactly how the season started for a team with little expectations. The Reds were 7-15 early on and were just 27-33 after the first 60 games.

On June 6, things started to turn around for the franchise and it coincided with the major league debut of Elly De La Cruz – a 21-year-old third baseman and shortstop with a lot to prove, but a lot of promise. He has now played 30 games and is batting .325 with 4 home runs, 16 RBIs, 28 runs, and 16 stolen bases.

Since joining the lineup, De La Cruz has given the Cincinnati Reds the boost they needed – the team is 22-8 in those 30 games and went on an impressive 12-game win streak between June 10 and June 23. They entered the All-Star break with sole possession of first place in the NL Central with a 50-41 record.

The emergence of Elly De La Cruz isn’t the only thing propelling the Cincinnati Reds to a hopeful playoff berth, but it’s no coincidence that their ascension came at the same time as his debut – and certainly not a coincidence that they went on a 12-game win streak just four games after that debut on June 6.

During that streak, the Reds outscored their opponents 79-53 and, while they gave up 4.42 runs per game, they were averaging more than 6.58 runs per game themselves. Two of those games ended in extra innings and six of those games were won by just one run – they were tested, but it didn’t matter.

Their 12-game win streak fell just one short of the Tampa Bay Rays’ 13-game win streak to start the season (they were 13-0 before losing their first game), but let’s not sugarcoat anything – the Reds’ streak was far more impressive, considering the circumstances. With that being said, let’s take a closer look at it.

1. Reds Defeat Cardinals 8-4 (June 10)

On June 10, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8-4 on the road. Andrew Abbott earned the win with 4 strikeouts and 0 earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched, extending his record to 2-0 on the season. The Reds finished the game with 10 hits and scored eight runs without hitting a home run.

Luke Maile opened the scoring with a three-run double in the 2nd inning, while Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer each had an RBI in the third inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Steer came through again with a two-run double in the 7th and Tyler Stephenson sealed the deal with an RBI single in the 9th.

Stephenson and Maile led the way with two hits each, while Maile and Steer combined for six total RBIs (three RBIs each) in the win. TJ Friedl was the only Reds’ player not to record a hit in the game, finishing 0-5 from the plate, but the rest of his team picked up the slack and the Reds won their first of 12-straight.

2. Reds Defeat Cardinals 4-3 (June 11)

On June 11, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on the road. Ian Gibaut earned himself the win after giving up just one hit in 1.2 innings pitched – Hunter Greene gave up 3 earned runs in 5.1 innings as the starting pitcher, but didn’t have the run support before being pulled out of the game.

Jonathan India hit a solo home run in the 1st inning, but the Cardinals responded with two runs in the 2nd. Elly De La Cruz had an RBI single in the 3rd to tie the game, but the Cardinals responded with a run of their own just moments later. Tyler Stephenson had an RBI in the 6th and 8th innings to secure the win.

Will Benson led the Reds with three hits, while Stephenson led the team with two RBIs – both of which came late in the game and proved to be the deciding factor. De La Cruz continued his impressive hitting with two hits of his own, including one RBI and two runs scored. The team played well down the stretch.

3. Reds Defeat Royals 5-4 (June 12)

On June 12, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on the road. Buck Farmer earned himself the victory with one strikeout, one hit, and one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched – Luke Weaver allowed three runs in 4.2 innings as the starting pitcher and the Reds burned through six pitchers in total.

Cincinnati was down 3-0 early on, but scored four unanswered runs between the 3rd and 9th innings – including a solo home run by Stuart Fairchild. The Royals tied it up in the bottom of the 9th, but TJ Friedl scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning after Jonathan India grounded into fielder’s choice.

Friedl, India, and Tyler Stephenson each finished with two hits, while Friedl and India combined for three of the team’s five RBIs. Elly De La Cruz saw his batting average dip below .300 with an 0-5 effort, but his team came up big in extra innings to seal the deal – winning their third consecutive game on the road.

4. Reds Defeat Royals 5-4 (June 13)

On June 13, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on the road. Brandon Williamson earned his first win of the season with one strikeout, 7 hits, and 3 earned runs in 5.0 innings pitched – the Reds didn’t score a single run past the 2nd inning, but they also held the Royals to zero runs past the 3rd.

Kansas City opened the scoring with an RBI sacrifice fly in the 1st, but the Reds responded with five runs in the 2nd – including an RBI single by Spencer Steer, RBI double by Kevin Newman, RBI single by Stuart Fairchild, and RBI single by TJ Friedl. The Royals started to come back, but it wasn’t enough.

The Reds only had 5 hits to the Royals’ 8 hits, but that didn’t seem to matter as their explosive 2nd inning proved to be the deciding factor. Friedl led the way with two hits, while Steer, Newman, and Fairchild were the only other Reds’ players with a hit. Elly De La Cruz continued his hitless streak with an 0-3 effort.

5. Reds Defeat Royals 7-4 (June 14)

On June 14, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-4 on the road for their 5th-straight win. Ben Lively earned himself the win with 4 strikeouts, 10 hits, and 2 earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched. His bullpen allowed three runs late in the game, but the Reds’ lead was too far out of reach.

Spencer Steer started things off with a solo home run in the 2nd inning, but the Royals responded with a run of their own in the 3rd inning. The Reds scored again in the 4th inning and hit three home runs in the 5th inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead thanks to Stuart Fairchild, Matt McLain, and Jonathan India.

McLain and India led the way with two hits each and combined for five of the team’s seven RBIs – McLain had a three-run homer, while India had an RBI double and solo home run. Spencer Steer, Stuart Fairchild, and Tyler Hopkins each had one hit, while Elly De La Cruz again finished without a hit – he finished 0-4.

6. Reds Defeat Astros 2-1 (June 16)

On June 16, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Houston Astros 2-1 on the road after a well-deserved day off. Andrew Abbott earned his third win of the season with 2 strikeouts, 4 hits, and 0 earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched – Alexis Diaz almost allowed the Astros to come back in the 9th inning, but he held on.

The game was scoreless through six innings, but the Reds finally came alive with two runs in the 7th inning – Tyler Stephenson hit a solo home run to left field and Kevin Newman hit an RBI double to bring Will Benson home. The Astros scored off a groundout in the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

The team decided to play without Elly De La Cruz – who was 0-12 in the team’s three-game series vs. the Royals. His batting average dropped to .235 on the year, but his hitless streak would mark the start of something incredible. For now, his team was picking up his slack and they were still getting the job done.

7. Reds Defeat Astros 10-3 (June 17)

On June 17, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Houston Astros 10-3 on the road to earn their seventh consecutive victory. Hunter Greene earned his second win of the season with 3 strikeouts, 5 hits, and 2 earned runs in 6.0 innings – the bullpen allowed just one run and they had more than enough run support.

Jonathan India opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the 1st and the Reds extended their lead to 5-1 through five innings – including a two-run single by Will Benson. They had a 6-3 lead before scoring 4 runs in the 9th, which included a two-run single by Kevin Newman and a two-run triple by Matt McLain.

Benson was perfect at the plate and finished 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run, while four others had two hits in the win – including McLain, Spencer Steer, Tyler Stephenson, and Elly De La Cruz. It was a welcomed return to the lineup for De La Cruz, who scored a run in the 7th inning off a single by Stephenson.

8. Reds Defeat Astros 9-7 (June 18)

On June 18, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Houston Astros 9-7 on the road to earn their eighth consecutive win – all of which were on the road. Ian Gibaut earned his seventh win of the season with one strikeout, 2 hits, and one earned run in 1.0 innings pitched – the game was decided in extra innings.

Both teams traded shots throughout the game. The Reds found themselves down 5-2 after five innings, but scored three runs in the 6th to tie the game and another run in the 8th to take a lead. The Astros tied it up in the 9th inning, but the Reds’ three runs in the 10th inning were too much for the Astros to handle.

Jake Fraley, Spencer Steer, and Jonathan India each finished with a home run, while TJ Frield, Elly De La Cruz, and Fraley each had two hits in the win – Fraley led the way with three RBIs. De La Cruz had his second-straight 2-hit performance, which was much-needed after his 0-12 hitless streak a few days prior.

9. Reds Defeat Rockies 5-4 (June 19)

On June 19, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-4 at home to earn their ninth-straight win – it was their first home game since the streak started. Brandon Williamson allowed 3 earned runs in 5.0 innings, but it was Alex Young who earned his first win of the season, despite pitching just 0.1 inning.

The Reds’ bats were turning in the first five innings as they took a 3-1 lead thanks to solo home runs by Kevin Newman in the 1st inning, Nick Senzel in the 2nd, and Joey Votto in the 5th. Colorado responded with three runs of their own in the 6th inning, but Votto’s two-run single in the 6th made all the difference.

Votto was the only Reds’ player with a multi-hit game and he led the way with three of the team’s five RBIs – it was his season debut after being activated off the injured list earlier that day. Elly De La Cruz finished 1-4 from the plate and scored a run in the 6th inning to help will his team to a tough victory.

10. Reds Defeat Rockies 8-6 (June 20)

On June 20, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-6 to earn their 10th consecutive win and 2nd consecutive win at home. Ben Lively allowed two earned runs in 4.0 innings as the starting pitcher, but it was Alex Young who earned his second win in as many games with just 1.0 inning pitched.

The Reds were down 0-1 after the 1st inning, but a three-run home run by TJ Friedl in the 2nd inning gave them a lead and they scored two more runs in the 3rd – including a home run by Elly De La Cruz. They scored two more runs in the 5th inning and Will Benson had a home run in the 6th to seal the deal.

Between Friedl and De La Cruz, the Reds weren’t losing this game. Friedl went 4-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while De La Cruz finished 3-4 with a home run and 2 runs scored. De La Cruz saw his batting average increase to .308 – the first time he surpassed the .300 mark since June 11. He was back at it.

11. Reds Defeat Rockies 5-3 (June 21)

On June 21, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-3 to earn their 11th consecutive win and 3rd consecutive win at home. Andrew Abbott allowed three earned runs and had 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched, but it was Ian Gibaut who earned his 8th win of the year and Buck Farmer got the save.

The Reds were held scoreless through the first four innings and allowed the Rockies to hit three home runs – finding themselves in the hole, down 0-3 early on. A two-run single by Luke Maile and one-run single by TJ Friedl helped tie the game up, while a two-run home run by Jake Fraley sealed the deal.

Tyler Stephenson led the team with three hits, while Maile and Fraley each produced two RBIs to help will their team to victory. Elly De La Cruz went 2-4 from the plate with one run and saw his batting average increase to .321 on the season as he recorded a hit in his fifth consecutive game after a small slump.

12. Reds Defeat Braves 11-10 (June 23)

On June 23, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Atlanta Braves 11-10 at home to earn their 12th straight victory and fourth straight win at home after a much-deserved day off. Luke Weaver allowed five runs in 3.1 innings pitched, but his bullpen came through and Alex Young who earned his third win of the year.

The Reds found themselves down 0-5 after the first inning, but tied the game by the 4th inning with home runs by Jake Fraley, Elly De La Cruz, and Joey Votto. They scored six more runs in the 5th and 6th innings thanks to Votto’s second homer and two RBIs by De La Cruz – including an RBI triple in the 6th.

De La Cruz was spectacular, finishing the game 4-5 from the plate and earning the first cycle of his career – he also had four RBIs and three runs scored as his batting average rose to .361 on the year. Votto also had four RBIs in the win thanks to his two home runs and Fraley chipped in with another two RBIs.

What’s Next for Elly De La Cruz and the Cincinnati Reds?

Elly De La Cruz is a stud and has made no mistake about it in the first 30 games of his young career. He has the Cincinnati Reds looking like true contenders in the NL Central, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have it easy the rest of the way out – they still have 71 games to play and a lot can happen in three months.

The Reds will come out of the All-Star break with a 50-41 record and will open the second half of the season with a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers before hosting the San Francisco Giants for a four-game series. They’re just 2-5 against the Brewers this year, but have yet to play the Giants.

They’ll need Elly De La Cruz to continue proving his worth in the major leagues, but it’ll take a team effort to make the postseason. Ian Gibaut has been the relief pitcher they needed with an 8-1 record in 42 games played, while Spencer Steer, Jonathan India, and Jake Fraley each have at least 10 home runs.
