On December 8th, 2019, the Cleveland Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-19. Little did the Bengals know, the Patriots had filmed the Cincinnati Bengal’s sideline throughout the entire game.

On Sunday, the NFL fined the New England Patriots $1.1 million and took away a third-round 2021 draft pick. In addition, the Patriots’ television production crews will not be allowed to film any games during the 2020 season, and senior club officials will be required to take a course on league operations and game policies.

At the time of the investigation, the Patriots fired their supervising producer, David Mondillo. At the conclusion of the investigation, the NFL banned Mondillo from all NFL facilities until further notice.

Despite letting the Browns know that the production crew was filming a Patriots web series titled “Do Your Job,” the Patriots failed to inform the Bengals of the film, which violates NFL policy.

The New England Patriots released a statement saying, “The sole purpose of the filming was to provide an illustration of an advance scout at work on the road. There was no intention of using the footage for any other purpose. We understand and acknowledge that our video crew, which included independent contractors who shot the video, unknowingly violated league policy by filming the field and sideline from the press box”

However, this is not the first time the Patriots have been caught illegally recording teams.

In 2007, the Patriots were caught filming the Jets’ defensive coaches’ signals from an unauthorized location which violated NFL policy and gave the New England Patriots an unfair advantage.
