Tiger Woods Injured In ‘Single-Car Accident’, Doctor Gives Update On Tiger’s Status
In what was a normal Tuesday morning for Tiger Woods, it turned quickly into a scary moment for him, his family, and golf fans around the world.
Tiger Woods Ventures stated that “Tiger was involved in a single-car accident earlier this morning (February 23) in California. He has undergone a long surgical procedure on his lower right leg and ankle after being brought to the hospital.”
Thankfully, Tiger Woods Ventures stated at 10:30pm February 23 in a press release that Tiger “is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room.”
The chief medical officer and interim CEO at the hospital Tiger is being treated at (Harbor-UCLA Medical Center) gave an update late in the evening of February 23 via Tiger Woods Ventures.
“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center,” Dr. Anish Mahajan, MD, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center chief medical officer & interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, said. “Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg requried surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

The handling deputy for this collision described the scene of the crash and his interaction with Tiger at a press conference on Tuesday.
“The fact that he was wearing a seatbelt, I would say that it greatly increased the likelihood that it saved his life,” LA County Sheriff Deputy Carlos Gonzalez said via USA Today.
“Unfortunately Mr. Woods was not able to stand under his own power,” Deputy Gonzalez said via USA Today. “Our partners at L.A. County Fire were able to extricate him from the vehicle and they put him onto a backboard. When I arrived on scene, Mr. Woods was seated in the driver’s seat. I made contact with him and I ensured that he was able to speak to me. At that time, he seemed as though he was still calm and lucid….The nature of his vehicle, the fact that he was wearing a seatbelt, I would say that it greatly increased the likelihood that it saved his life.”
The company that provided the update statement Tuesday evening, Tiger Woods Ventures, is the company Tiger founded that “unifies the philanthropic and business ventures Tiger has founded in a shared mission: to create opportunities to strive for excellence”.
