Tom Brady’s Father Reveals Honest Opinion About His Son’s 2-Month Retirement

Tom Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., is excited to see his son return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and continue his elongated career. 

Just two months after the seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback announced that he would be stepping away from the field, he revoked the statement and shared that he would be returning to Tampa Bay for his 23rd NFL season. “These past two months I have realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands. That time will come. But it’s not now,” the quarterback wrote on Instagram. 

While many folks have questionable commentary about this short-lived retirement, Brady’s father openly offered support over his son’s decision.

Tom Brady Sr. is ‘happy as could be’ that his star son is back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

“We’re happy as could be that Tommy has made the decision to come back,” said the 44-year-old’s father, according to CBS.“(He) had time to reflect with his family, you know, (on) what gives him the greatest joy in his life, and they all agreed that this is the path forward that works best for the Brady family.” 

Brady Sr. also noted that prior to his son’s initial announcement, far too many NFL commentators were making predictions on whether or not the athlete would return, which created a sense of pressure. He shared, “They were announcing his retirement before he even retired. You know, the media made the news. He was not ready to make any decision and didn’t make any decision.” 

Although it is incredibly rare to see a person this dedicated and involved in the game at age 44, Brady Sr. was able to recognize that his son is far from normal. After needing time to reflect on what he really wants out of his career, choosing to continue into a 23rd season seemed appropriate. 

“He is happy as can be … It just took a little bit of time to sort this thing out. I mean, he’s kind of in uncharted territory … Not very many people get to make this decision at 44 years of age, going on 45,” the father explained. 

“He just doesn’t play football,” he continued, relaying his son’s commitment to the sport. “He is a football player to the soles of his shoes. He loves every minute of it … Nothing replaces the joy that he gets being on the 100-yard football field.”
