CSU Tight End Trey McBride Could Make History as 1st NFL Player to Have Openly Same-Sex Parents

Trey McBride, tight end at Colorado State Univerity, is likely going to make NFL history as the first-ever player to have two openly gay parents. 

The upcoming NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday in Las Vegas, Nevada, and as a prominent player in NCAA Football, there is a very real possibility the CSU athlete will be selected by a team. If this is the case, he and his family will be making history. McBride could become the first NFL player with two openly same-sex mothers, which his sisters cite as “great role models” and the reason for having a “very special” upbringing. 

Speaking on behalf of his mothers, the NCAA football star shared that growing up with two moms was never strange to him. “Really, it’s just normal to me,” he said during an interview with TODAY.

However, the couple explained that things have not always been easy for them when they were first beginning their family. Kate and Jen McBride had been together for years before they decided they wanted to start a family in the 90s, during which they experienced various forms of discrimination. 

“They actually considered me a single mom,” Kate shared. She added the information, “And I do remember telling my parents that I’m pregnant, and they said, ‘Why would you want to have a baby as a single woman?’ And I said, ‘I’m not a single woman. I’m in a relationship.'”

Since then, the two have brought five children into the world, all of whom have described their parents as extremely supportive. In fact, McBride stated that since he was a child, they have been encouraging him to pursue a career in football. 

“They’ve done a great job of pushing me to be the best version of myself and just constantly giving support and love,” said the athlete. 

Kate and Jen also noted that their son has been adamant about his passion for football since he was a kid. Naturally, they always had their suspicions that his time for the NFL would come. 

“When your kid comes to you when they’re little and they say they want to be president, you’re like, ‘OK, honey, that’s great,'” Kate commented before relaying, “He wanted to play in the NFL, and he’s going to do it.”
