Trinity Rodman Picked 2nd In NWSL 2021 Draft—Oh, and She’s Also Dennis Rodman’s Daughter
Trinity Rodman was selected second overall in the 2021 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft by the Washington Spirit.
“My mom has taught me to be extremely humble and not just focusing on everything I’m good at ’cause I feel like a lot of players at a high level could be like ‘I’m good at this, I don’t need to work on anything, I’m in a spot that I need to be’,” Rodman said in an interview with the Washington Spirit media. “And I think to be at the next, next level you need to work on the things that you’re not as good at…I’m just so excited to work with everybody, even our young players, our older players, I’m excited to learn from different players, the way they play and the different types of drive they have.”
Rodman played for Team USA’s Under-20 National Team as a forward. She helped the team win the 2020 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Women’s U-20 Championship per US Soccer.
The US won against Mexico, 4-1. “The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team claimed its record sixth Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship with a 4-1 triumph over Mexico as forwards Trinity Rodman and Mia Fishel each scored twice,” US Soccer said in March 2020.
Here’s the full game, in case you’re interested in watching some soccer (aka football or fĂştbol around the world):
Here was CBS Sports‘ analysis of Rodman’s play on the pitch leading up to the 2021 NWSL Draft:
“The goal scoring U-20 standout has attracted attention with her offensive capabilities, having scored eight goals and six assists as the team went on to win the 2020 CONCACAF U-20 women’s championship, including scoring twice in the championship final that led the U.S. past Mexico, 4-1…Rodman was set to embark on her freshman year with Washington State, however the pandemic quickly altered things and she did not make an appearance for the Cougars. Her ability on the ball and knack for goal could make her a solid pickup for a team looking to build with a forward through continued development.”
CBS Sports: NWSL Draft 2021: “Three big names to know, including Trinity Rodman” by Sandra Herrera
Rodman was tied for first on the team in assists during the tournament, with six total assists. The forward also scored 7 goals during that tournament.
And if that last name’s been sounding familiar it’s because she’s the daughter of Dennis Rodman per On Her Turf.
“He was an amazing athlete, and I got those genes from him, but I’m excited to be known as Trinity Rodman and not just as Rodman’s daughter,” Trinity said per People. “I’m excited to pave my own path and get better throughout this journey.”
