During a game in Austin on Saturday, the soccer player injured her knee before the USWNT’s bid for their third consecutive World Cup title. She underwent surgery for the tear and it is unlikely she will be able to compete in the upcoming games this summer. Following the tear, she took to Instagram and thanked those who supported her.

“I don’t have much to say other than thank you to everyone…I feel the love and prayers, and holding them close to my heart,” she wrote on social media. “Surgery this morning was a success. I’m thankful for my trainers, doctors, coaches, and teammates for their help throughout this process.”

Swanson concluded her Instagram post with the sentiments, “The beauty out of all of this, is that God is always good. He’s got me and always has.”

However, the injury also affected her husband, MLB player Dansby Swanson of the Chicago Cubs. Upon his wife’s injury, he left the Cubs game immediately to be by Mallory’s side. Waking up early at 4 a.m., Dansby was in Chicago that morning to take Mallory Swanson to a local hospital for surgery.

Dansby Swanson discusses caring for Mallory Swanson following her knee injury

“I’m glad that we can be here together. I couldn’t imagine being apart right now,” Dansby told MLB.com after the incident. “I think everybody knows it’s a pretty tough and heartbreaking situation just for her. I’m heartbroken for her. Just a lot of tears and sadness. We can be sad and upset, but we can also understand God’s bigger picture and plans. We’ll get through it together.”

On top of Mallory’s injury, Dansby Swanson discussed his own body deficits. Throughout a recent game, he revealed a tightness on his lower left side, which was later described as “cramping.”

“Realistically, I felt like my body was just kind of done,” he explained. “I felt like doing anything more probably would have put me in harm’s way. The night was over for me.”

“Pretty simple, probably haven’t eaten or slept or drank enough water over the past few days. I already started getting a lot of fluids in me and taking care of myself,” Swanson added.
