Legendary WWE Star Rey Mysterio is 'Proud' to Face His Son in the Ring at WrestleMania 39

Legendary WWE Star Rey Mysterio is ‘Proud’ to Face His Son in the Ring at WrestleMania 39

Before iconic wrestler Rey Mysterio is inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this weekend, he is excited to join his son Dominik in the ring for the familial showdown of the century.

“I’ve crossed out so many accolades in my life — from becoming an individual superstar to sharing the ring with some of the best, top superstars in WWE history,” the Hall of Famer said during an interview with TODAY.com. “Now, it’s come to an end, but in a good way — I’m not doing this as me leaving. It’s the last thing on my bucket list to accomplish, and it’s happening while I’m still in full effect.”

Interwoven with his history in professional wrestling, Mysterio also serves as a significant force in the Latino wrestling community. Continuing the legacy of his father, the 48-year-old acknowledged the pride he has over his heritage.

“It’s a huge honor to represent our culture,” he shared. “The doors that have been opened for me, and for the talent that is coming up behind me … I don’t even have the correct words to describe it.”

Mysterio went on to cite Puerto Rican wrestlers Pedro Morales, Carlos Colón, and the late Eddie Guerrero for paving the way for opportunities that have made his career possible. Now, he hopes to inspire the younger generation. The wrestler stated, “I feel truly honored to be able to open that pathway for the future that’s behind us. I can only tell you that I can’t wait for it to grow even more as we move forward.”

Rey Mysterio discusses his son Dominik continuing the family legacy

With this being said, one of the wrestlers he’s inspired is his own son, Dominik, who made his WWE in-ring debut in 2020. According to the father himself, he is proud of the performer his son is growing up to be.

“I understood how much pressure was on his back because he was Rey Mysterio’s son,” he explained. “The fact that he’s been bold with opportunities — he’s taking them, he’s ran with them and he’s crushed it — every single time, as a father, that makes me very proud.”

Amazingly, Mysterio and Dominik became the first-ever father-son tag team champions in 2021. Even better, the legacy continues when the two faces off inside the ring at WrestleMania 39.

“Being together and sharing the ring together and accomplishing so many things in a short amount of time with my son was incredible and enjoyable,” Mysterio said of the experience. “I wish I had more time to enjoy more of those moments because it happens so fast — in the blink of an eye.”
