5 Overtime Stanley Cup Playoff Game Breaks Multiple Records, as the Columbus Blue Jackets Suffer Crushing Loss
The hockey world watched in awe on Tuesday, as the first round Stanley Cup Playoff game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay lasted until the fifth overtime period.
Now, because it is playoff hockey, overtime is played 5 on 5 instead of 3 on 3, but there hasn’t been a game this long since 2000. In fact, at 150 minutes and 27 seconds, it is the fourth longest overtime game in NHL history.
The game started at 3:09 EST and lasted all the way until 9:22 EST. The game lasted so long that the Flames vs. Stars game that was set to start two and half hours after the Lightning and Blue Jackets’ game wound up ending more than an hour before at 8:10 EST. The Bruins vs. Hurricanes game that was supposed to start at 8:00 EST was postponed to tomorrow morning at 11:00 as they were set to play at Scotiabank Arena, as well.
There were 110 minutes and 4 seconds between Yanni Gourde’s game-tying goal in the third period and Brayden Point’s game-winning goal in the fifth period of overtime.

There were also many records broken throughout the game. On top of the length of the game two other records were broken, both by Columbus players.
Though he let in three goals and wound up losing the game Joonas Korpisalo set an NHL Stanley Cup record when he made 85 saves in the game. Defenseman, Seth Jones also set a record, as he set the NHL postseason record for time on ice for a skater at 65:06.
The two and half hour game was filled with excellent hockey, and though there were few goals scored for the amount of time played, that doesn’t mean the offense was lacking. Both offenses had dozens of excellent chances, but both Korpisalo and Vasilevskiy were excellent in net.
After a long game like this, there are many questions for the rest of the series. This win was a tough and fought-for win that will certainly swing things in Tampa Bay’s favor. We will have to see how Columbus responds to this devastating loss on Thursday.
