In early March, WNBA star Kelsey Plum married the love of her life, NFL tight end Darren Waller. With this being said, fellow NFL players were not afraid of Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels after Waller was traded.
Just before their union, Las Vegas announced a trade agreement in which Waller would go to the Giants in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft—pick No. 100. With this being said, many were surprised to see this trade go down, especially when McDaniels expressed interest in keeping the tight end with the franchise weeks prior.
“I have a great deal of confidence in Darren Waller… he’ll be a big part of what we’re going to do going forward,” McDaniels said at the time.
Additionally, prior to the marital event, Waller was reportedly upset with the head coach for leaking his wedding plans. For months, the NFL player planned to keep his union to Plum a private event. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the unexpected reveal was upsetting to Waller.
“The timing is only interesting because Josh McDaniels accidentally leaked the news of his wedding to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine,” Tafur said. “Waller was upset with McDaniels when the Las Vegas Review-Journal posted a story announcing the wedding was scheduled later in the week. The couple had not publicly announced their plans to get married.”

After wedding pictures were posted on Instagram, retired NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III took to Twitter to discuss the trade. He even suggested the surprising trade was an unfortunate wedding present. “Darren Waller JUST GOT MARRIED to Kelsey Plum of the Las Vegas Aces and Josh McDaniels’ wedding present was to trade him to the New York Giants,” the quarterback wrote. “McDaniels is NOT a romantic.”
However, the Las Vegas Aces star proceeded to reveal there was never a chance for McDaniels to offer her husband a wedding gift because he wasn’t invited to the event. Plum wrote in response to Griffin, “Prolly cause he wasn’t invited to the wedding lol.”
In a follow-up tweet, the basketball player made sure to emphasize her love for the city. “It was a joke people LOL,” Plum went on to explain. “I love Las Vegas, here to defend the title. I will put down my phone now.”
