After a complicated relationship with other teams in the NFL, the 27-year-old exhibited true talent in his latest game. When the Cleveland Browns traded him to the Carolina Panthers following the 2021 season. He started the 2022 season with Carolina, he quickly wanted out of his contract with them. In the middle of this season, he requested release from Carolina and was soon picked up by the Los Angeles Rams on December 6th. By the 8th, was playing in his first game.

With less than 48 hours to adjust to his new team, Mayfield described the transition process as stressful. In fact, he was at the airport out of Carolina when he received the news that the Rams picked him up. “I honestly was just waiting in the airport for a phone call, hoping and praying the call was from a Los Angeles number,” the athlete reflected. “Plane Wi-Fi was not friendly on that one, so I was pretty stressed out.”

The stress and quick pace of his singing were evident, but the Rams’ decision to sign Mayfield certainly seems to be paying off.

Despite low expectations, Mayfield proved that he is a force to be rocketed after completing his first pass for 21 yards and a first down to Van Jefferson. Moreover, he led his team to a 17-16 victory over the Raiders after two touchdowns with less than five minutes left in the game.

Los Angeles Rams head coach discusses Baker Mayfield’s debut

Although Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay did not start the new quarterback, John Wolford was pulled from the game and replaced with Mayfield. According to McVay, the decision to put the 27-year-old was done because of intuition. “He felt good,” the coach said.

“We wanted to get Baker in, whether it was the second or the third series. Felt good about it,” McVay went on to explain. “It wasn’t anything that John didn’t do. We wanted to be able to get Baker an opportunity to see if he could give us a spark, certainly he did that, being able to hit Van on his first throw.”

McVay also announced that their usual quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is dealing with an ongoing spinal cord injury, which will likely leave him out for the season. With Stafford gone, this opens up an opportunity for Mayfield to keep showcasing his talents.
