NHL Superstar, Connor McDavid, Tests Positive for the Coronavirus
The Edmonton Oilers’ 2020 NHL season ended poorly, as the team’s promising Stanley Cup hopes died abruptly when they were eliminated in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers to the 12 seed, Chicago Blackhawks. The bad news for the Oilers continues a week after the Stanley Cup Playoffs have ended, as their captain and arguably the current face of the NHL, Connor McDavid, has tested positive for the coronavirus.
McDavid realized he was infected on Monday morning. He is currently self-quarantining in his house north of the US-Canada border.
In regards to McDavid’s positive test, the Oilers released the following statement:
“Earlier today, Oilers captain Connor McDavid underwent medical testing that revealed a positive result for the COVID-19 virus. Since that time, he has been involuntary self-quarantine at his home. He will continue to be monitored and will follow all associated health protocols. He is feeling well and is experiencing mild symptoms.”
While the Oilers didn’t go very far into the postseason, McDavid had another fantastic year in 2020 with 97 points in only 64 regular-season games.
While it is fortunate that McDavid’s symptoms are mild, and he is in none of the at-risk groups, there should still be concern for his health in the future. COVID-19 has been known to create long term heart and lung conditions, and while one would think the chances of this happening are slim, they are certainly not zero.
