Drew Brees Suffers Major Backlash from Controversial Comments in Interview

Drew Brees has received some major backlash for comments he made in an interview with Yahoo Finance on Wednesday.

When asked what he thinks about NFL players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial profiling of African-Americans, Brees answered, “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country.” Drew Brees also mentioned in the interview that he sees the pregame ritual as a symbol of unity.

Brees finds himself inundated with backlash for his poor judgment from fans and fellow players.

One player who clapped back at Drew Brees’ comments was future Hall of Famer, Aaron Rodgers. On his Instagram, Rodgers remarked, “It has NEVER about an anthem or a flag. Not then. Not now.” Many fans and players have commended Rogers for his thoughtful remarks, including Brees’ former teammate, Mark Ingram

Hall of Fame Safety Ed Reed chimed in saying “Drew Brees, you’re a straight sucker for that.”

Most importantly, however, some of Brees’ own teammates have responded to the quarterback’s distasteful comments.

It has been confirmed that both Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas unfollowed Brees on Twitter, and Thomas had a tweet of his own for his quarterback. Thomas remarked, “We don’t care if you agree and whoever else how about that.”

Brees also got some flak from Saints’ safety, Malcolm Jenkins who filmed a statement on his twitter in which he said, “I considered you a friend. I looked up to you. I had a great deal of respect for you. But sometimes, you should shut the f**k up.”

The emotional Jenkins also remarked, “If you don’t understand how hurtful, how insensitive your comments are, you’re part of the problem.”

Unfortunately for the Saints organization, Jenkins ended his statement with, “Even though we’re teammates, I can’t let this slide.”

Drew Brees has really shot himself in the foot with his comments. His remarks have offended his teammates and were detrimental to the Saints’ chemistry. Not to mention, Brees’ comments are incredibly untimely and unnecessary.

Most importantly, Brees has let his teammates, his fans, and the entire football community down with his comments.

No matter how impressive his football career has been, Drew Brees has marred his legacy. He may never be looked upon with the reverence his fans and peers had.
