New England Patriots Make Shocking Decision to Sign Former NFL MVP, Cam Newton
Former NFL MVP Cam Newton finally reached an incentive-laden deal with the New England Patriots on Sunday.
After losing to the Titans in the postseason last year, Tom Brady decided to leave the Patriots and his Hall of Fame bound coach, Bill Belichick, and settle in Tampa Bay with an assortment of offensive weapons including Bruce Aryans as head coach.
Cam Newton was selected first overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 draft. Soon after, Newton became the Panthers’ starting quarterback.
Despite 4 different playoff appearances and three different Pro Bowls in 9 years, Newton’s best season is not hard to find.
In 2015, Newton lead the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 regular-season record and eventually to Super Bowl 50.
In Super Bowl 50, both quarterbacks, Cam Newton and Peyton Manning, fumbled twice and threw an interception. In one-possession game with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter, Von Miller forced a fumble for the Broncos fueling the Broncos’ 24-10 win. Despite the crushing defeat, Newton received the MVP award and was voted on as the top player of 2015 by NFL players.
Even with an impressive resume, Newton was replaced by Teddy Bridgewater in Carolina and remained unsigned through the majority of the NFL offseason, mainly because of all the other great free-agent quarterbacks, such as Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Dak Prescott, Ryan Tannehill, and Philip Rivers.

Many people speculated Cam Newton would sign with New England soon after Tom Brady left, however, it took over 3 months for the Patriots to reach an agreement with Newton.
Belichick has always shown respect towards Newton: When you’re talking about mobile quarterbacks, guys that are tough to handle, tackle, can throw, run, make good decisions… I would put Newton at the top of the list.”
