On March 31, 2020, the Jacksonville Jaguars traded quarterback, Nick Foles, to the Chicago Bears for a compensatory fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft.

In April of 2020, general manager of the Bears, Ryan Pace, confirmed that there will be an open preseason competition between the former Super Bowl MVP, Nick Foles, and the current quarterback for the Bears, Mitchell Trubisky.

Mitchell Trubisky is 25 years old and was drafted 2nd overall in the 2017 draft. Nick Foles on the other hand, is 6 years older and was drafted 88th overall in the 2012 draft. Both Foles and Trubisky have made the Pro Bowl once.

In week 14 of the 2017 season, Carson Wentz, the Eagles starting quarterback, tore his ACL and Nick Foles was deemed the starter for the rest of the season. Foles lead the underdog Eagles all the way to the Super Bowl where they found themselves matched up against Tom Brady and the Patriots. However, Nick Foles performed under pressure and threw for 373 yards in the 41-33 Eagles victory. His performance earned him Super Bowl MVP.

Mitchell Trubisky has played in one playoff game in the 2018 season, in which the Bears lost by one point to the Eagles because of a missed field goal.

The Competition

Mitchell Trubisky said that when he first heard that he would compete with Foles for the starting spot, he was “kind of pissed off in a good way. I’ve been motivated ever since. I think it’s going to be good competition… I know we’re going to push each other. But I still feel like this is my team and I’m excited for the competition and just get back on the field with my guys and show everybody what I can still do and how hard I’ve been working this offseason to help the Bears win games this year.”

While Foles has a lot of experience and has played at very high levels, Trubisky has already formed chemistry with his teammates, and he is a lot younger than Foles. Despite the intense upcoming battle with Foles, Trubisky says, he feels “confident about where my career is headed.”
