“Every day I see a new excuse why people ain’t getting the vaccine,” the 25-year-old NBA player wrote on Twitter. Making note that people are using excuses to not get vaccinated, he pointed out that they are also getting creative. Towns continued and shared, “Ya starting to get creative with these ‘reasons’ though and it’s actually really funny.”

Upon tweeting the bold claim, the Timberwolves star was flooded with critiques that argued against his remark.
Jon Krawczynski, a writer that specializes in Timberwolves news, quoted the tweet and defended Towns, implying it is insensitive for people to be angry with him considering his experience with COVID. Towns went on to respond, stating, “It never matters to people until it happens to them. I hope no one has to deal with what I’ve had to and still continue to deal with.”

Karl-Anthony Towns’ heartbreaking personal relationship with COVID

The basketball player has been an avid advocate for getting vaccinated, particularly because he lost his mother and six other family members due to the virus. He took to Instagram to share his story, in which he detailed his mother’s harrowing experience with COVID, including that she had put into a medically induced coma. “The disease needs not to be taken lightly, Please protect your families, your loved ones, your friends, yourself. Practice social distancing. Please don’t be in places with a lot of people,” the NBA star stated during the video.

This was also not the first time he has urged his followers to follow COVID protocols. Taking to social media to share his pleas, the NBA star wrote, “I pray every day that this nightmare of a virus will subside and I beg everyone to continue to take it seriously by taking all the necessary precautions. We cannot stop the spread of this virus alone, it must be a group effort by all of us.”

Towns even went as far as donating $100,000 to fund COVID testing at the Mayo Clinic. He explained, “I have a lot of people who I have in my family — my mom’s family — that have gotten COVID and are still looking for answers and trying to find how to keep them healthy. It’s a lot of responsibility on me to keep my family well informed and to make all the moves necessary to keep them alive.”
