Aaron Rodgers Wants the New York Jets, But Do the Jets Want the 39-Year-Old Veteran Quarterback?

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is outwardly dedicated to playing for the New York Jets next season. But, how do the Jets feel about this?

According to the bargaining between the two teams, they are unable to come up with an agreement that will leave both franchises happy. Most simply, the Packers are willing to trade their quarterback in exchange for New York’s 2023 second-round pick, a conditional 2024 second-round pick, and a 2025 draft pick. However, with the possibility of Rodgers retiring in the near future, they’ve refused to sign off on this deal.

The Jets fearing a possible Rodgers retirement comes the 2024 season is not unreasonable, either. Especially considering the 39-year-old recently revealed he was 90% sure he was going to conclude his career prior to embarking on a darkness retreat.

“I’ve got to admit, I went into the darkness 90 percent retired [and] 10 percent playing,” Rodgers said following his emergence from the darkness retreat.

However, according to ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Wednesday, the Packers have since taken this offer off the table. Florio explained, “The holdup had been that the Packers were adamant on getting the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, and I think they backed away from that…Two words I’ve heard from the Jets in relation to what the Packers’ demands were: unreasonable and irrational.”

With this being said, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst revealed he thinks a first-round pick is not necessary, but is a fair trade for one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

“That’s not a necessity,” Gutekunst explained. “But at the same time, the value of the player, he’s a premier player. So, I think getting premier picks back for that or players is important.”

Despite claims that the teams are growing impatient because of this deadlock, New York Jets coach Robert Saleh said he is in no hurry to make a deal with Green Bay over Rodgers. He shared in a recent interview, “There’s not a ton of urgency from our standpoint right now. But still very optimistic.”

Yet, Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed different sentiments about the situation; he said he feels “anxious” about the deal. Johnson relayed, “We’re anxious, I guess. We look forward. We’re optimistic. We have a plan. We’re willing to stick with our plan. I don’t think anybody is hyperventilating.”
