Gerard Piqué Opens Up About His Difficult June 2022 Divorce From Shakira

Soccer star Gerard Piqué is ready to discuss what his priorities are following his separation from Latin superstar Shakira.

The pair were in a relationship for over a decade and had two children together. After meeting in 2011, the media has openly seen the couple’s strong bond and relationship building over the years. However, in June 2022, the power couple announced they were divorcing.

While things seemed amicable at first, infidelity rumors would begin to surface after the soccer player posted pictures with his new girlfriend. Despite the hardships of divorce, both Piqué and Shakira’s main goals remain to take care of their children.

“It is about protecting them,” Piqué said in a recent interview, according to E! News. “That is the job of all parents with children. That is what I am focused on, and that is my job as a father.”

Since going public with his relationship with his new girlfriend, Clara Chia Martí, Piqué relayed that he wasn’t going to worry about his public image moving forward. “The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted. I want to be faithful to myself. I’m not going to spend money cleaning up my image,” he shared.

From a parental standpoint, Shakira also held similar sentiments when she first discussed the split in September. But, she was more open about the difficult elements of breaking up with her long-term partner. Not only is processing the breakup hard, but she struggles to keep her kids away from the spotlight.

“It’s been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult. I have paparazzi camping outside, in front of my house, 24/7. And there’s not a place where I can hide from them with my kids, except for my own house. I’ve tried to conceal the situation in front of my kids. I try to do it and to protect them, because that’s my number one mission in life. But then they hear things in school from their friends or they come across some disagreeable, unpleasant news online, and it just affects them, you know?”

With this being said, separating from Piqué in and of itself was a situation that left Shakira upset. She expressed the sentiments, “What’s also real is the disappointment to see something as sacred and as special as I thought was the relationship I had with my kids’ father and see that turned into something vulgarized and cheapened by the media.”
