Did Shohei Ohtani Just Have the Best Month in Baseball History? Breaking Down His Impeccable Month of June

It has been a full month since we last saw June on the calendar, but baseball enthusiasts are still trying to process the dominance Shohei Ohtani displayed in the month of June. He proved why they call him ‘Shotime’ and put on a masterful month-long performance in June – it was the ‘Greatest Sho on Earth.’

As a batter, he played in 27 games in June and had a .394 batting average with 41 hits, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 15 home runs (led MLB), 29 RBIs (led MLB), and 27 runs scored. He also led the MLB in on-base percentage (.492), slugging percentage (.952), OPS (1.444), extra-base hits (25), and total bases (99).

As a pitcher, he made five starts and had a 2-2 record with a 3.26 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 30.1 innings pitched. He limited opposing batters to a .228 batting average. .302 on-base percentage, and .368 slugging percentage. When you couple that with his performance at the plate, his month was legendary.

If you haven’t been watching baseball the past few years, now’s the perfect time to start and Shohei Ohtani is a big reason why – just look at what he did in the month of June. He set a new Angels’ record with his 15 home runs and it was also tied for the most home runs in the month of June in AL history.

Here are some of the other major accomplishments to come from his month of June:

– Most home runs in a single month in franchise history

– 47th time in MLB history that a player hit at least 15 home runs in a single month

– Tied for most home runs in June in AL history

– New career-best in batting average, hits, and RBIs in a single month

– Reached base in all but one of his 27 games

– Belted his 150th career home run

– Had a hit in all but three of his 27 games

– Third-highest slugging percentage (.952) in June in MLB history

– Increased his batting average 41 points – from .269 to .310

– Ended June on an 8-game hitting streak

– Six home runs off pitches outside the strike zone

– First player in 10 years to hit 30 home runs before July

– Hit longest home run of the year (493 feet)

It wasn’t just fun to watch – it was historic. It was something we likely won’t see from anyone else in the near future as he continues to raise the bar. In an effort to preserve his impeccable month and marvel at his stellar play, we’re going to re-live the month of June Shohei Ohtani had not long ago – game-by-game.

1. June 1 @ Houston Astros

Batting Stats: 1 for 5 (0 for 1 w/ RISP), 2 strikeouts

On June 1, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in five at-bats during a 2-5 loss to the Houston Astros. He hit a single to right field in the top of the 1st inning, but went 0 for 4 the rest of the way. The Angels took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Astros scored three runs in the 5th and another run in the 8th to take control. It wasn’t the best start to the month for Ohtani and the Angels.

2. June 2 @ Houston Astros

Batting Stats: 0 for 4 (0-2 w/ RISP), 1 walk, 2 strikeouts

Pitching Stats: 6.0 innings, 8 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, 2 home runs, LOSS

On June 2, 2023, Shohei Ohtani went hitless in five plate appearances – though he did receive a walk in the top of the 8th inning. It wasn’t a good performance, by any means, and he also struggled on the mound – allowing five runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings and receiving his second loss of the season in the team’s 2-6 loss to the Houston Astros. Don’t worry, his struggles wouldn’t stick around for too long.

3. June 3 @ Houston Astros

Batting Stats: 4 for 5 (1-1 w/ RISP), 1 double, 1 triple, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored

On June 3, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded four hits in five plate appearances and was just a home run shy of hitting a cycle. His triple came in the top of the 3rd inning and helped bring home Hunter Rengifo – he also had an RBI-double in the 7th inning. It was his second four-hit game of the season – he last did it on May 15 when he was a double shy of a cycle. Unfortunately, the Angels still lost to the Astros 6-9.

4. June 4 @ Houston Astros

Batting Stats: 1 for 4, 1 double, 1 RBI

On June 4, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in four at-bats, but it was a clutch one that helped lead his team to a 2-1 victory over the Houston Astros – effectively avoiding the four-game sweep. He hit a double in the top of the 10th inning with 2 outs, bringing home Zach Neto and giving the Angels a 2-1 lead. It was the Angels’ first victory of the month and put them over the .500 mark at 31-30 on the year.

5. June 6 vs. Chicago Cubs

Batting Stats: 1 for 2, 2 walks, 1 home run, 1 RBI, 2 runs

On June 6, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in two at-bats, but also recorded two walks in the Angels’ 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs. His one hit was a much-needed one – a solo shot (his first of the month) in the 4th inning with his team down 0-4. The Angels went on to score six more unanswered runs after the HR to steal the victory – including a run by Ohtani following an infield single by Matt Thaiss

6. June 7 vs. Chicago Cubs

Batting Stats: 1 for 4 (0-2 w/ RISP), 1 double, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

On June 7, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in four at-bats – which included a strikeout and a walk – during a 6-2 win against the Chicago Cubs. His lone was a double in the bottom of the 4th inning, but it didn’t lead to a run and he went 0 for 3 the rest of the night. It marked his 11th double of the season and the Angels won their third game in a row. At this point, Ohtani’s batting average was just .275.

7. June 8 vs. Chicago Cubs

Batting Stats: 1 for 5 (0-3 w/ RISP), 2 strikeouts

On June 8, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in five at-bats and struck out twice – but the Angels still managed to walk away with their fourth consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Ohtani’s lone hit was a single to center field in the 2nd inning, but it didn’t lead to a run – his batting averaged dropped to .274 on the year. He has had an average month up to this point, but it gets better.

8. June 9 vs. Seattle Mariners

Batting Stats: 3 for 4 (0-1 w/ RISP), 1 double, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 1 run

Pitching Stats: 5.0 innings, 3 hits, 3 runs (3 earned), 5 walks, 6 strikeouts, 1 home run, 97 pitches, NO DECISION

On June 9, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded three hits, 2 RBIs, and 1 run in a 5-4 win against the Seattle Mariners – marking the Angels’ fifth consecutive win and Ohtani’s sixth consecutive game with a hit. He recorded his 12th double of the season and his 17th home run of the year, while also pitching well enough to keep his team in it. The game was tied 3-3 when he stopped pitching, but LA scored 2 runs in the 6th.

9. June 10 vs. Seattle Mariners

Batting Stats: 1 for 4 (0-1 w/ RISP), 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 1 run, 2 strikeouts

On June 10, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded just one hit in four at-bats, but it was a good one – hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning with two outs. His team was down 0-3 before that shot and, while it put the Angels back in the game, the Mariners went on to score three more runs to win 2-6. Ohtani recorded his 8th RBI and 3rd HR of the month – also his second home run in as many games.

10. June 11 vs. Seattle Mariners

On June 11, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded three hits in five at-bats, bringing his season batting average to .287 and recording his 16th hit of the month. While he grounded out in the first inning, he followed that up with a single in the 3rd (which he scored a run off of) and a single in the 4th before striking out in the 6th inning – his final hit was a single in the 8th inning. He also extended his hit streak to eight games.

11. June 12 @ Texas Rangers

Batting Stats: 2 for 4 (1-1 w/ RISP), 2 home runs, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

On June 12, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded two hits in four at-bats – including a walk and a strikeout – during a 9-6 victory over the Texas Rangers. He hit his first home run of the night in the 7th inning – a solo shot that tied the game at 5-5 – and hit a two-run home run in the 12th inning to give his team a 7-5 lead. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning. His season batting average increased to .291 after the game.

12. June 13 @ Texas Rangers

Batting Stats: 2 for 2, 1 double, 2 runs, 3 walks

On June 13, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded two hits and proved that patience is a virtue with three walks in a 7-3 win over the Texas Rangers – the Angels’ eighth win in the past nine games. He didn’t record an RBI in the game, but he scored two runs – including one in the 6th inning off a throwing error and another in the 9th inning after stealing second base. Ohtani extended his hit streak to 10 games with a double.

13. June 14 @ Texas Rangers

Batting Stats: 2 for 4 (1-1 w/ RISP), 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout

On June 14, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded two hits, two RBIs, and one run in a 3-6 loss to the Texas Rangers – the Angels’ second loss in the month of June. Ohtani walked in the 1st inning and struck out in the 3rd inning, but hit a single in the 4th inning and hit a two-run home run in the top of the 9th inning as the Angels tried to mount a comeback. That comeback didn’t come, but Ohtani’s 21st HR of the year did.

14. June 15 @ Texas Rangers

Batting Stats: 1 for 2, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, 1 run, 2 walks

He not only recorded his first win of the month, but he hit his 22nd home run of the season – which was also his 2nd home run in as many games, 6th home run in the past 7 games, and 7th home run of the month. His batting average also rose above .300.

15. June 16 @ Kansas City Royals

Batting Stats: 1 for 3, 1 double, 1 run, 2 walks, 1 strikeout

On June 16, 2023, Shohei Ohtani recorded one hit in three at-bats during a 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals – extending his hit streak to 13 games with his 14th double of the season in the top of the 1st inning. He scored off that double thanks to a wild pitch and single by Brandon Drury. It was also his 5th straight game with a walk, 9th walk in the past 5 games, and 3rd multi-walk game in the past 5 games.

His lone hit was – you guessed it – a solo home run in the top of the 7th inning to give his team an 8-2 lead. Unfortunately, the Angels allowed eight runs in the final three innings and lost the game, despite entering the bottom of the 9th inning with a 1-run lead.

17. June 18 @ Kansas City Royals

The Angels were down 1-2, but Ohtani’s home run was the difference.

18. June 20 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Batting Stats: 0 for 4, 2 strikeouts

On June 20, 2023, Shohei Ohtani failed to record a hit for just the second time in June and failed to reach base for the first time that month – only three Angels’ players recorded a hit in the Angels’ 0-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals. It also marked the end of Ohtani’s 15-game hit streak. He flied out in the 1st, struck out in the 4th, flied out in the 6th, and struck out in the 8th as he struggled to get any contact.

19. June 21 vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Batting Stats: 0 for 3, 1 walk

Pitching Stats: 7.0 innings, 5 hits, 1 run (1 earned), 2 walks, 12 strikeouts, 1 home run, 101 pitches, LOSS

On June 21, 2023, Shohei Ohtani failed to record a hit for the second-straight game, but he reached base once off a walk in the 1st inning – he was called out at second after Mike Trout grounded into fielder’s choice. While he struggled at the plate, Ohtani was electric on the mound and only allowed five hits in 7.0 innings – striking out 12 batters in the process. Unfortunately, his Angels lost the game 0-2.

20. June 23 @ Colorado Rockies

Batting Stats: 3 for 5 (0-1 w/ RISP), 1 double, 1 home run, 1 RBI, 1 run, 1 strikeout

Ohtani also hit his 15th double of the season in the 1st inning – his first hit since June 18.

Two of his teammates went 5 of 5 and four others had at least 3 hits. Ohtani’s lone hit came in the top of the 3rd inning – an RBI single that led to a run when Brandon Drury brought him home.

His triple came in the first inning and he ended up scoring off it thanks to a triple by Mike Trout. He also singled in the 7th and had an infield single in the 9th, raising his batting average to .309 on the season.

Unfortunately, that comeback never came and the Angels lost to the Chicago White Sox 7-9. Ohtani’s home run was his 14th in the month of June, which set a franchise record for most home runs in June by an Angels’ player.

Unfortunately, his Angels were already down 5-0 before that home run and they lost 2-6 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Shohei Ohtani Isn’t Slowing Down Anytime Soon

Shohei Ohtani had a historic month of June, but he isn’t stopping there and continues to terrorize opponents – both at the plate and on the mound. He currently leads the MLB in home runs – he has six more than the next closest (Matt Olson) – and is just three RBIs behind the MLB’s current RBI leader.

He has played in 20 games in the month of July (through July 28) and has a .257 batting average with 18 hits, 1 double, 2 triples, 9 homers, 14 RBIs, and 20 runs. He also made four starts as a pitcher and was 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 25.1 innings – including a one-hit complete game on July 28.
