“We always poke fun that Cameron is the favorite because he’s the youngest,” the tennis star said of her younger brother during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE Magazine. “But no, he just goes on his own path. He’s a true youngest sibling.”

More specifically, Gauff noted that Cameron’s “own path” largely coincides with his artistic abilities. “For every Christmas, he would ask for something art related,” she commented, noting her brother’s drive to obtain proper tools for his passion. “Now, on my door in my room, I have one of his drawings up there.”

But, how exactly did Cameron come up with the newest New Balance design? According to his 18-year-old sister, he obtained a ‘how to make a sneaker’ book from New Balance and was quick to select colors and designs that complement each other. After he completed his shoe, the company was heavily inspired by his finished product to  the first New Balance kids performance tennis shoe, Coco CG1 Kids, which is on sale now.

She also said her brother was over the moon about the product hitting the shelfs, relaying that her brother brags about it to friends and classmates. Gauff proceeded to add the information, “He wears the shoes all the time.”

What was the inspiration behind Cameron Gauff’s New Balance shoe design?

“He was really excited,” Gauff relayed. “I think he kind of sensed it in a way because they asked him to draw on this shoe and then for the paper, so he’s young, but he kind of put two and two together.”

When discussing the inspiration behind Cameron’s design, the tennis player admitted that his natural childlike creativity is what drove the project. “I asked him about that and he said it was, ‘Just what I was feeling,’ ” she explained.

“I think that’s just like what’s fun about being a kid in general,” Gauff continued, further discussing her brother’s approach to the shoe design. “As you get older, you tend to overthink things. But I feel like kids really trust their first instinct and that’s kind of what he did. He just said he just thought the colors look cool together.”
