Paris Saint-Germain Defender Achraf Hakimi, 24, Charged with Sexual Assault

Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain’s 24-year-old defender Achraf Hakimi is facing preliminary charges after he was accused of rape.

The prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where the professional soccer player lives, said he was accused of sexual assault by a 24-year-old woman who said she was brought to the athlete’s home. “The footballer’s home is where things got out of control. Achraf kissed her on the mouth, lifted her clothes, and kissed her breasts despite her refusal. He also practiced vaginal touching despite, again, her resistance,” the victim’s statement reads.

While the woman did not press charges against Hakimi, “the gravity of her testimony meant that the prosecution office still decided to open an investigation.”

Since the incident was made known to the public, the soccer player’s legal representative Fanny Colin said her client “firmly denies all the accusations against him” and that Hakimi is the victim of “an attempted racket.”

“I remind that the indictment that followed this hearing is a must for anyone who is the subject of an accusation of rape and finally offers Mr. Hakimi the possibility of defending himself by opening up a large number of rights, first and foremost that of pursuing the file,” the attorney added. “After the few hours of hearing, I retain for my part that the informant refused to file a complaint, refused to submit to the slightest medical or psychological examination.”

Woman accusing Achraf Hakimi of rape wants to remain anonymous

Despite denying the allegations, Rachel Flore Pardo, the lawyer for the alleged victim, released a statement that insists her client is being truthful. “My client maintains everything that she said. She made the choice to speak exclusively to prosecutors and does not want the affair to become a media issue, mainly to protect her safety,” she said.

Hakimi has since been indicted by an investigating judge and placed under judicial supervision, but he is allowed to leave French territory, according to multiple news outlets. The allegations come only days after the professional soccer player was honored at the FIFA Awards in Paris for being voted to the men’s all-star team.

Paris Saint-Germain released commentary that addressed their player’s investigation and informed fans that they remain committed to Hakimi. “The club supports the player, who has firmly denied the accusations and trusts the justice system,” the organization said. “Paris St-Germain is an institution that promotes respect on and off the pitch.”
