In a statement released by the University, it said, that “the University of Alabama’s utmost priority is the safety and well-being of the campus community. We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends.”

“We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency response teams, and we will continue to fully support the ongoing investigation. We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been removed from campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team.”

According to reports, the woman, who has yet to be identified, was shot and killed around 1:45 a.m. Sunday night. She was reported inside a vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle the woman was in called 911 to report the shooting and revealed that he returned gunfire in self-defense. It was unclear if he may have hit the suspect but said there was a possibility the shooter was injured.

Police were able to review video footage of the incident and speak with witnesses before making two arrests; one of which was Miles. One of the arrested suspects did suffer a non-life-threatening injury from the returned gunfire. It’s unclear if that suspect was Miles.

Just hours before the shooting occurred, Miles was last seen in public supporting Alabama versus LSU. Miles has been ruled out for the season due to an ankle injury.

Alabama won the game 106 to 66. The shooting is believed to be the result of a “minor argument” reports suggest.
