Trea Turner Hits 2 Home Runs in Same Inning vs. Washington Nationals — Here Are 20 Other MLB Players to Accomplish Such a Feat

On August 19, 2023, Philadelphia Phillies’ shortstop Trea Turner joined a coveted list of MLB players to hit two home runs in the same inning – something that has only been done 65 other times in the history of the MLB. It was also just the second time a player has hit two home runs in the same inning this season.

It came in the top of the 8th inning with the Phillies tied 3-3 in what appeared to be a tight game vs. the Washington Nationals. Cory Abbott had just replaced Andrés Machado on the mound and Turner was the first batter he faced. Three pitches in, Turner hit a leadoff home run that traveled 394 feet to left field.

The 8th inning turned out to be a nightmare for Abbott, but a monstrous inning for the Phillies. The score was 10-3 by the time Trea Turner stepped up to the plate for the second time in the inning. Three pitches in (much like last time), Turner hit a solo home run that traveled 389 feet to left field (much like last time).

Charley Jones of Boston Red Stockings was the first MLB player to hit two home runs in the same inning – he did so on June 10, 1880 and it came in the 8th inning of a game against the Buffalo Bisons. Since then, 60 other MLB players have accomplished the feat – five of whom achieved it twice in their career.

Those coveted five MLB players to do it twice in their career include Willie McCovey (1973 and 1977), Andre Dawson (1978 and 1985), Jeff King (1995 and 1996), Alex Rodriguez (2007 and 2009), and Edwin Encarnacion (2013 and 2019). Now that Trea Turner has done it once, will he join this list soon?

As of today, the only other active MLB players to do so (aside from Turner) include Masataka Yoshida (2023), Gleyber Torres (2022), Edwin Encarnacion (2013 and 2016), and Pablo Sandoval (2011). As you can see, it doesn’t happen very often and has only happened three times between 2020 and 2023.

With that said, let’s take a look at 20 of the more notable MLB players (not listed above) to hit two home runs in the same inning.

Have Two MLB Teammates Ever Hit Two Home Runs Each in the Same Inning?

There are two MLB players who weren’t included in the list above, yet deserve some recognition for making MLB history on May 2, 2002. Those two players are Bret Boone and Mike Cameron of the Seattle Mariners – to this day, they’re the only teammates to each hit two home runs in the same inning.

It happened in the first inning of the Mariners’ matchup against the Chicago White Sox on May 2, 2002. Boone and Cameron were batting second and third, respectively. They first hit back-to-back home runs off Jon Rauch early in the inning and then hit back-to-back home runs on Jim Parque later in the inning.

They’re the only brothers to each hit two home runs in the same inning. A whopping seven players did it during the 2002 season – the most in a season in MLB history.
