Friday was an action-packed day in the NHL as the Panthers, Predators, Penguins, Oilers, and Wild all saw their 2020 Stanley Cup hopes disappear upon their elimination. There would have been six teams eliminated if the Toronto Maple Leafs hadn’t scored three goals in the final five minutes of regulation to force overtime. In overtime, Toronto Maple Leafs’ Alternate Captain, Auston Matthews scored the game-winner to force a Game 5 against the Blue Jackets this Sunday.
Much to everyone’s surprise, the five seed Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated by the twelve see Montreal Canadiens after Montreal won 2-0 on Friday. The Canadiens won the series 3-1, and the Penguins have lost 9 of their past 10 post-season games.
The thing that I find most absurd and up to chance is the overtime rules for the round-robins.
The Oilers were one of the best teams in the Western Conference during the regular season, and they nearly qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately, they will have to go through the Chicago Blackhawks as the fifth seed.

With the NHL returning at the beginning of August, the finalists were announced for the end of season awards. The finalists for the Lady Byng award are Auston Matthews, Ryan O’Reilly, and Nathan MacKinnon.

Since many of Las Vegas’ hotels and casinos reopened on June 4, the city of Las Vegas and the state of Nevada have unfortunately seen a spike in coronavirus cases. Naturally, my views have changed on Las Vegas’ qualification to host the playoffs, and apparently, so have the NHL’s.
